Introduction
Zelnite® is an injection product used to prevent or treat patients with selenium deficiency that cannot be offset by intake from food sources, or in patients receiving parenteral nutrition. Selenium is a critical element and known to be required for more than two dozen Selenoproteins such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and Thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) which play important roles in systemic redox regulation and immune response. Low selenium level is highly associated with poor disease prognosis such as sepsis, HIV, and cancer. It has therefore been recommended that the use of selenium supplementation should be considered in critically ill patients, especially for those receiving long-term total parenteral nutrition (TPN) treatment. Zelnite® has obtained NDA approval from TFDA and is distributed in many hospitals and clinics in Taiwan.
