Healthy Ageing Tech Show: NHRI Uses Technology to Assess Seniors' FitnessAug 05, 2024

Obesity is a root cause of many diseases, but as people age, being underweight can pose risks such as muscle loss. As elderly individuals become less active, they may experience muscle loss and decreased strength, leading to sarcopenia. This condition can further result in dementia, osteoporosis, and various physical discomforts.

Ju-Yu Wu, Director of the Planning Office of the Academic Development Division at the National Health Research Institutes (NHRI), stated that Taiwan is on the brink of becoming a super-aged society, and the issue of dementia is a significant concern. Many people question why dementia cases are increasing. In reality, the risk of developing dementia rises with age. In the past, individuals did not live long enough to develop dementia, so there was limited understanding of aging and dementia. Over the past few decades, changes in family structure and advancements in healthcare have extended life expectancy.

Generally, after the age of 30, muscle mass begins to decline annually, with a critical threshold at around 60. Insufficient muscle mass can lead to instability while walking, increased risk of falls and injuries, and sarcopenia often accompanies osteoporosis. Falls that result in fractures can lead to subsequent immobility and increased mortality risk. Additionally, sarcopenia can cause cognitive impairments and increase the risk of dementia.

Wu highlighted that aging involves not only health issues but also changes in social structures. She believes that addressing the problems associated with aging requires not only increased self-awareness of health but also national intervention and support, such as improving elder care quality and creating age-friendly environments.

At this year's inaugural Healthy Ageing Tech Show, NHRI focused on the longevity health industry, setting up booths divided into three main areas: health promotion, assistive technology, and caregiving technology. These areas provided educational information and interactive segments. NHRI invited fitness industry partners to conduct muscle strength assessments and teach proper exercise techniques on-site, urging the public to build muscle early.

An elderly participant with silver hair demonstrated weightlifting, creating a heartwarming scene. Fitness coaches shared that strength training can enhance muscle endurance and correct poor postures such as hunchbacks and rounded shoulders. The exhibition also featured technology-based fitness assessment systems and senior sleep evaluations, attracting visitors of all ages.
