Innovative Wearable Abdominal Belt with Unique Vibration Mode Activates Deep Muscles, Relieves Lower Back Pain from Prolonged Sitting!Jul 30, 2024

A team led by Assistant Professor Dr. Chich-Haung Richard Yang at Tzu Chi University has developed a wearable device that stimulates deep muscles in the abdominal and lumbar regions. Utilizing low-threshold random vibrations to precisely target these areas, this device effectively activates deep muscles, helping to alleviate lower back pain and enhance athletic performance. It offers a novel intervention strategy for rehabilitation therapy and sports training.

Traditional Treatments Have Limited Effectiveness; Deep Muscle Training is Key

Lower back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders, especially exacerbated by prolonged sitting, poor posture, or sports injuries. This condition is prevalent among competitive athletes and often stems from the overuse of superficial back and abdominal muscles or poor motor control. A significant factor is the functional weakness of deep lumbar muscles. Traditional treatments such as medication and physical therapy have limited effectiveness and can cause side effects. In recent years, sports science has recognized exercise training as an effective method for treating lower back injuries, yet it struggles to stimulate the deep abdominal and lumbar muscles effectively.

Precise Stimulation of Deep Muscles Enhances Core Stability

The core technology of this wearable abdominal belt lies in its unique vibration mode. When powered, the voice coil motor generates a magnetic field that drives the motion seat, causing the stimulation nodes to target deep lumbar muscles. By precisely controlling the vibration frequency (180Hz to 220Hz), amplitude (8.8mm to 10.8mm), and thrust (5.6N to 7.6N), the device can effectively activate the deep transverse abdominal and multifidus muscles, enhancing core stability. It avoids stimulating superficial muscles like the rectus abdominis, external obliques, and erector spinae, thereby reducing lower back pain, improving athletic performance, and lowering the risk of sports injuries. The precise stimulation effect has been verified through ultrasound imaging and electromyography.

Technology Enters Clinical Trials with Vast Future Potential

Professor Yang stated that this wearable belt is currently being used in the daily training of competitive swimmers and has received positive feedback. The team is committed to further optimizing the technology, actively collaborating with the industry, and advancing the technology transfer of software, hardware, and intellectual property to accelerate the product's market launch. In the future, this technology could be applied in broader fields such as rehabilitation, sports protection, and elderly care, offering a comprehensive and effective solution for lower back pain and related musculoskeletal issues.
