National Cheng Kung University Establishes Taiwan's First University-Based CDMOJul 31, 2024

With the global biomedical industry booming, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has combined the strengths of its Comparative Medicine Research Center, Medical Device Innovation Center, and Department of Oncology, National Cheng Kung University Hospital to establish the nation's first University-based CDMO (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization). Officially open to the public from June 30, this facility aims to drive biomedical technology innovation, offer interdisciplinary collaboration, and promote smart healthcare. It will assist biomedical startups in development and foster talent in biomedical technology.

The University-based CDMO operates as a one-stop platform for early-stage biotech and medical device research and preclinical validation. It aims to support startups and small enterprises by leveraging NCKU's advanced technological resources to develop biomedical technologies, providing solutions for new companies lacking sufficient resources. This initiative is expected to enhance the biomedical industry, accelerate biomedical startups, and increase competitiveness.

The Department of Oncology at NCKU was established in August 2017. Initially, it was formed by Dr. Wu-Chou Su, Dr. Chia-Jui Yen, Dr. Peng-Chan Lin from the Hematology and Oncology Department, and Dr. Hai-Wen Chen and Dr. Yuan-Hua Wu from the Department of Radiology. After its establishment, Director Wu-Chou Su, with the support of NCKU Hospital, set up the Oncology Medicine Research Laboratory on the 6th floor of the outpatient building for ongoing research. Under the support of Dean Yan-Shen Shan of the Medical School and the efforts of Director Chia-Jui Yen, the Department of Oncology officially moved into the Biomedical Excellence Building.

The Medical Device Innovation Center, founded by Chair Professor Fong-Chin Su of NCKU, is a leading academic research unit in Taiwan. It has been actively expanding in cross-disciplinary talent cultivation, innovative medical device development, academic-industrial startup ventures, professional industry services, and international promotion and development. In recent years, it has closely integrated with various colleges and clinical hospitals within NCKU, becoming the nation’s only center with a focus on innovative products and startup ventures.

The Comparative Medicine Research Center, planned by Dean Yan-Shen Shan of the Medical School, follows the model of the US National Cancer Institute. It is the first Comparative Medicine Research Center in Asia led by a medical school. Its mission is to integrate the resources of NCKU's Medical School, rebuild the research and clinical resources of Southern Taiwan's animal teaching hospital and regional animal hospitals, and create a new translational research base for innovative medical care. This center aims to expand collaborations with the US National Cancer Institute, international pharmaceutical giants like Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca, in innovative medical research, comparative medicine trials, and human clinical trials.
