Homegrown Innovation: Taiwan-Based Platform Optimized for East Asian Genomics
Founded in 2002 with roots in Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Phalanx differentiates itself from U.S.-based giants like Illumina and Agilent through disease-driven, high-density microarray design tailored to regional needs.
“We spent two to three years mapping hotspot loci linked to specific diseases,” says Dr. Chieh-Hui Wang, Division Chief of Marketing. This groundwork positions Phalanx’s solutions close to the clinical frontlines of Asia. In hearing loss diagnostics, for instance, the company consolidated a rare full-spectrum variant map and identified 10 key genes—several uniquely tailored to Taiwanese and East Asian populations.

Consumer-Led Cancer Screening: Vietnam as a Launchpad for Innovation
Endometrial cancer is on the rise among Asian women, and Phalanx’s Mpap® Endometrial Cancer Test addresses a major unmet need.
By leveraging methylation-based DNA detection, the test enables painless, non-invasive sampling directly from the cervix—or via a patented self-sampling tampon device at home in just five minutes, eliminating the need for surgery, anesthesia, or hospitalization.
“Vietnamese law allows OTC tampon sales in pharmacies, so we can distribute the kit directly via retail and e-commerce—no prescription needed,” explains Daisy Weng, Director of Business Development.
This consumer-first model removes traditional access barriers, enabling rapid scaling. In the pilot phase, Taiwan handles lab analysis and reporting while supporting local partners with certification and education. Later, operations will localize, with Taiwan continuing to supply chips and cloud analytics.
Localized, Replicable Partnerships: A Scalable Southbound Strategy
To expand across Southeast Asia, Phalanx adopts modular collaboration models tailored to each market’s maturity. Initially, Taiwan ensures technical oversight and quality. As demand grows, lab operations are transferred locally while Phalanx retains control over chip supply and analytics.
“In Indonesia, we’re engaging hospital chains for tech transfer. In Malaysia, we’re targeting the aesthetic medicine sector. In Vietnam, we’re going direct-to-consumer,” says Weng.This flexible approach allows Phalanx to quickly adapt and replicate success across the region.

“We’re building a health ecosystem—not just a one-time test,” says Yang.
Phalanx envisions a continuum of care starting from detection. High-risk individuals can be referred to partner clinics for further treatment; low-risk users enter a preventive monitoring program, ensuring ongoing engagement. This end-to-end model enables commercially viable precision medicine at scale, blending diagnostics, cloud analytics, and clinical partnerships.
