Taiwanese smart healthcare startup V5med has announced that its AI-assisted lung nodule detection system, developed in-house for lung cancer diagnosis, received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance on March 27. It is the first FDA-approved AI imaging product for lung cancer detection and one of the very few AI medical devices from Asia to successfully enter the U.S. healthcare market.
The system, designed to assist in interpreting low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans of the lungs, helps radiologists and pulmonologists efficiently detect early-stage lung nodules and identify suspicious lesions, reducing the risk of misdiagnosis and oversight. Clinical validation data showed the system met FDA standards for detection rate, case-level sensitivity, and false-positive control, demonstrating stable and reliable performance in aiding diagnosis.
V5med stated that the FDA clearance not only affirms the company's technological capabilities and product quality at the highest international level but also signifies that Taiwan’s smart healthcare technologies are globally competitive and ready to enter advanced healthcare systems such as the U.S., offering a new solution for early lung cancer detection worldwide.
The U.S. remains the largest and most rigorously regulated medical market in the world. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), lung cancer is among the leading causes of cancer-related deaths. LDCT has been proven to significantly reduce mortality in high-risk populations, and the integration of AI technologies further enhances the efficiency and accuracy of screening. V5med’s AI-assisted lung nodule detection system was developed precisely in response to this clinical demand, supporting physicians in making more accurate diagnostic decisions.
V5med is a subsidiary of Vela Technologies, a company specializing in semiconductor optical AI inspection solutions listed on Taiwan’s Emerging Stock Board. Both companies were founded by Quincy Lin (Lin Kun-Hsi), former Senior Vice President of TSMC. Leveraging its advanced AI inspection technology and experience from the semiconductor sector, V5med has successfully applied its innovations to the field of smart healthcare. It has already secured medical device certifications in Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, and is actively working with local distributors for market expansion.
V5med stated that FDA approval will serve as a key springboard into the American and Middle Eastern markets, driving the next phase of the company's growth. In addition to expanding the reach of its AI-assisted lung cancer detection system internationally, the company is also developing AI diagnostic technologies for other conditions, including lung disease follow-up, cardiothoracic and pulmonary multi-lesion analysis, and multi-modal diagnostics.
