Breakthrough in Pet Healthcare Across Asia-Pacific: Protect Biotech Partners with Rejuvenate Bio to Revolutionize Canine Cardiac Gene TherapyDec 12, 2024

Protect Biotech, a Taiwan-based leader in advanced therapies for companion animals, announced today its partnership with Rejuvenate Bio to bring groundbreaking gene therapy to the Asia-Pacific region. Initiated during discussions at the Medtex Asia Medical Technology Innovation Forum, this collaboration introduces an innovative treatment aimed at significantly slowing the progression of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) in dogs, potentially preventing heart failure. Developed from cutting-edge research at Harvard Medical School’s Wyss Institute, Rejuvenate Bio’s therapy uses gene delivery to express anti-aging genes, offering new hope to dogs suffering from heart disease and marking the dawn of a new era in the commercial application of pet gene therapy.

Under the agreement, Protect Biotech has secured exclusive rights to develop, distribute, and market Rejuvenate Bio’s innovative therapy across Asia-Pacific. The gene therapy is anticipated to receive conditional approval as a New Animal Drug from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by 2027. Protect Biotech plans to launch exploratory preclinical trials in Taiwan by the end of 2024, enrolling dogs diagnosed with MMVD.

MMVD is a common heart valve disease in dogs. As they age, the mitral valve thickens, leading to regurgitation and, eventually, heart failure. Affecting about 7% of all dogs, the prevalence rises sharply in smaller breeds such as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas, and Pomeranians, with rates reaching up to 80%. Rejuvenate Bio’s gene therapy has already demonstrated safety and efficacy potential in a study conducted in collaboration with Tufts University Veterinary Hospital, where 17 dogs received the treatment. The results showed sustained expression of the target protein for nearly three years, with promising safety outcomes.

“Pets are not just animals; they are cherished members of the family. We are committed to improving their quality of life with the latest advancements in biotechnology,” said Hao-Lin Sung, founder of Protect Biotech. “Many pet owners feel helpless due to limited treatment options. Through this partnership, we hope to bring cutting-edge technology to pet owners and their beloved companions in the Asia-Pacific region, creating a brighter future for them.”

Dan Oliver, CEO of Rejuvenate Bio, stated, “We are thrilled to collaborate with Protect Animal Health to bring our groundbreaking gene therapy to the Asia-Pacific market. This partnership marks a vital step in our mission to improve the lives of pets and their families through innovative science. Protect’s expertise in the region and shared commitment to advancing veterinary medicine make them the ideal partner as we work to address the unmet needs of dogs with mitral valve disease.”

This collaboration combines Rejuvenate Bio’s patented gene therapy expertise with Protect Biotech’s strong distribution network, drug development experience, and deep understanding of the veterinary market in the region. Together, they aim to accelerate the adoption of this therapy across Asia-Pacific, offering new hope to countless dogs suffering from heart disease.
