Clearing Damaged Tissue and Repairing Alveoli: Umbilical Cord Stem Cells May Reverse Pulmonary Fibrosis!Oct 07, 2024

Professor Fu Yu-Show from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and her team have developed a groundbreaking treatment for pulmonary fibrosis. By using human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell transplantation, they successfully reversed pulmonary fibrosis in animal studies, offering new hope for patients suffering from this condition.

Pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic, progressive disease where the lungs gradually harden, leading to breathing difficulties and, in severe cases, respiratory failure. The disease also carries a high mortality rate, severely affecting patients' quality of life. While existing medications can slow the progression of the disease, none have been able to reverse pulmonary fibrosis.

Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells: A Potential Reversal Agent for Pulmonary Fibrosis

The research team discovered that transplanting human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells into animal models with pulmonary fibrosis resulted in multiple therapeutic effects, including:

Inhibition of fibrosis progression: The stem cells suppress fibroblast activation, reducing excessive collagen production and preventing further lung hardening.

Clearing fibrotic tissue: The stem cells activate macrophages and stimulate the synthesis of MMP-9, which helps clear already formed fibrotic tissue, restoring lung elasticity.

Promoting alveolar regeneration: The stem cells promote the regeneration of alveolar epithelial cells, repairing damaged alveoli structures and improving the lungs' gas exchange function.

This innovative technique combines proprietary cell-directed induction technology with highly efficient cell culture conditions. This not only increases the proliferation and survival rate of the stem cells but also allows for tailored treatments for different conditions. Additionally, the technique enhances the immune-modulatory capabilities of the stem cells, making them more effective in treating autoimmune diseases or transplant rejection. Most importantly, the proprietary cell preparation and cryopreservation process ensures that the stem cells remain active and functional even after long-term storage.

Global Patents Secured, Accelerating Clinical Application

The technology has already been patented in multiple countries, laying the foundation for commercialization. Professor Fu stated that the team will further promote clinical trials and actively seek industry-academia collaborations to accelerate the clinical application of this technology. In the future, this technique is expected to become a frontline therapy for pulmonary fibrosis and could also offer new therapeutic approaches for other chronic lung diseases.
