The inaugural Healthy Ageing Tech Show opened yesterday (2nd) at the Taipei World Trade Center Hall 1. In the afternoon, a special seminar titled "Experiences of a Relaxed Life" was held, hosted by Ming-Shiang Wu, Director of National Taiwan University Hospital. The seminar featured former Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-Pyng, former President of Academia Sinica Chi-Huey Wong, and Academia Sinica academician Pan-Chyr Yang, who shared their insights on enjoying a fulfilling elderly life, focusing on the mindset and attitude of seniors and maintaining a healthy lifestyle in old age.
Chi-Huey Wong emphasized that "doing what you love" is the key to maintaining mental and physical health. He advised that after retirement, it’s important for seniors to cultivate other interests. For instance, he enjoys reading, staying updated with news from various fields, and listening to music and watching shows, which are activities he finds enjoyable and engaging. Pan-Chyr Yang similarly believed that people should engage in activities that bring them joy. He noted that many seniors experience a rapid decline in health after retirement due to a lack of focus and goals. Therefore, it’s essential to have direction and objectives even after retirement and to maintain a certain level of activity to prevent significant health deterioration.
Furthermore, Ming-Shiang Wu pointed out that maintaining good mental and physical health is closely related to exercise. Physical activity promotes the release of serotonin, which not only improves mood but also helps seniors sleep better at night. For elderly people, "walking" is the best form of exercise. Pan-Chyr Yang shared that he not only takes regular walks and strolls in the evenings but also practices "super slow jogging" at home. He finds that doing 30 minutes of super slow jogging daily makes him feel comfortable and boosts his mood. Wang Jin-Pyng, now 83 years old, mentioned that he never thinks about his age because he still remains active. As the Chairman of the Taiwan Cancer Foundation, he personally participates in activities such as brisk walking and jogging organized by the foundation.
Wang Jin-Pyng also addressed the importance of managing stress and not letting it build up internally. He advised that the principle of maintaining physical and mental health is to "not get angry." He highlighted that holding onto anger ultimately harms oneself and that anger only damages one’s health. He suggested that people should prioritize harmony in all matters and try to restrain from lashing out. Treating others with kindness can help maintain a happy and pleasant mood.
