Renowned Scientist Chen Chien-jen Appointed President of Academia SinicaJan 05, 2026

The President of Taiwan officially confirmed on the 2nd the appointment of former Vice President and Academician Chen Chien-jen as the 13th President of Academia Sinica, effective June 21, following the conclusion of current President James C. Liao's term. Dr. Chen is a world-renowned epidemiologist with a distinguished career in both academia and public service, having served as Vice President of Academia Sinica, Vice President of the Republic of China, and Premier.

Academic & Public Contributions:

  • Expertise: A global authority on Blackfoot disease and chronic arsenic poisoning. His research established international standards for arsenic levels in drinking water. His work on Hepatitis B and liver cancer has become the foundation for global clinical guidelines.
  • Credentials: Ph.D. in Epidemiology from Johns Hopkins University. He is an international member of the US National Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
  • Public Policy: He was instrumental in establishing Taiwan’s public health and epidemic prevention systems as the Minister of Health and the Minister of the National Science Council.

Academia Sinica noted that outgoing President Liao significantly advanced quantum technology, net-zero initiatives, and pandemic-response technologies during his tenure.
