Formosa Plastics Group Advances Strategic Pivot into New Energy and BiomedicineDec 23, 2025

The Formosa Plastics Group (FPG) is reporting successful progress in its niche transitions. Formosa Smart Energy is active in battery cells and energy storage, aiming for break-even in its first year of operation, while Formosa Biomedical and Nanya are expanding their medical footprints.

Biomedical Milestones:

  • Formosa Biomedical: Its COVID-19/Flu A&B 2-in-1 rapid test kit has seen strong exports to Japan, with annual sales exceeding 1.5 million units. The medical version received Taiwan MOHW approval in June, and the home-use version is currently undergoing the approval process.
  • Nanya Medical Materials: Chairman Wu Chia-chao revealed 21 ongoing biomedical projects. High-priority items include leukocyte reduction blood bags, cell culture bags, and anti-adhesion barriers. Nanya has also finalized a strategic investment in Apexcella Biomedical (艾沛生醫) to bolster its cell culture bag business. Once these projects reach scale, FPG plans to spin off the medical materials business into an independent entity.
  • Energy and AI: Formosa Smart Energy has secured 13–15 energy storage site orders this year. It is also targeting the AI data center market for backup power systems, aiming for industrial energy storage to account for 20% of revenue by 2027.
