The 2025 Anniversary of the Institute for Biotechnology and Medicine Industry (IBMI) was held on the 9th in the banquet hall of the Grand Mayfull Taipei Hotel, drawing widespread attention with the attendance and speeches of President William Lai and Minister of Economic Affairs Kuo Jyh-huei. The event brought together 500 participants, including IBMI founder Wang Jin-pyng, Quanta Chairman Barry Lam, IBMI members, and leaders from various sectors.
In his speech, President Lai emphasized that Taiwan possesses a comprehensive national health insurance database and globally recognized strengths in both healthcare and high technology. At this critical juncture in the global rise of AI technologies, he firmly believes that the biomedical industry can become Taiwan’s next trillion-dollar “national strategic industry.”
IBMI President Chi-Huey Wong noted that over its 23-year history, IBMI has played a key role in the development of Taiwan’s health-related industries. The annual Anniversary of IBMI has become an important platform for uniting industry partners and exchanging insights on emerging trends and development strategies.
In recent years, IBMI has actively promoted the integration of ICT with the health industry and advanced the application of AI technologies in biomedical development. The organization has also strengthened international engagement, aiming to establish the health industry as a vital pillar of Taiwan’s economic growth. This year’s theme, “Continuity,” gathered cross-disciplinary leaders to explore how national policy visions, global dynamics, and industrial momentum can be harnessed to drive progress and reinforce Taiwan’s biotech and health sectors, laying a solid foundation for a “Healthy Taiwan.”
In his keynote speech, Minister Kuo highlighted four core strengths of Taiwan’s biomedical sector: (1) a world-leading semiconductor and ICT industry that enables deep integration with digital health, AI medical imaging, and precision medicine; (2) comprehensive medical data that accelerates the advancement of personalized healthcare; (3) internationally aligned medical regulations that facilitate global collaboration and business opportunities; and (4) a well-developed biomedical cluster. Taiwan’s biomedical industry is projected to reach NT$773.9 billion in revenue in 2024, marking a 2.1% growth compared to 2023.
Facing dramatic shifts in the global economic and trade landscape, Taiwan must adopt a global perspective, deepen trade relationships with democratic partners, and work together to build a secure and resilient global supply chain. This aligns with the strategic goal of “rooting in Taiwan, expanding globally, strengthening ties with the U.S., and promoting worldwide.”
Taiwan’s biomedical sector holds world-class strengths and competitiveness, positioning itself as the ideal partner for brands and supply chains through speed and flexibility. In a world of 8 billion people all striving for longevity, health, and safety, Taiwan’s continued expansion into the wellness and preventive health markets—and its close collaboration with democratic economies—will ensure that its health industry rises to global prominence.
