On the 20th, KIM FOREST, a leading genetic testing company, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Taiwanese subsidiary of Illumina Inc., a global leader in genomic sequencing technology. Through this collaboration, KIM FOREST will integrate its proprietary AI platform, combining large language models (LLMs) and advanced AI algorithms, to enhance training based on the unique genetic background of the Chinese population. The goal is to improve the accuracy of whole genome sequencing (WGS) data interpretation.
AI applications in the biomedical field are flourishing, and Taiwan’s comprehensive National Health Insurance system and medical databases offer significant advantages for advancing genetic testing technologies. Although current limitations in electronic medical record formats hinder comprehensive data analysis, the Ministry of Health and Welfare recently announced plans to integrate all healthcare data through the Taiwan Medical Information Standards Platform within two years. This initiative positions Taiwan to become a global leader in AI applications in healthcare.
In response to the growing healthcare needs of both healthy and sub-healthy populations, KIM FOREST established its wholly-owned subsidiary, Essense AI, which earlier this year launched the “Whole Genome AI Platform.” This platform integrates whole genome sequencing and multi-omics data, along with physician expertise, into generative AI. It helps health management centers deliver precise wellness solutions for healthy and sub-healthy individuals, including health checkups, lifestyle adjustments, exercise plans, and nutritional guidance. The collaboration with Illumina, a frontrunner in scientific research and the biotech industry, will enable KIM FOREST to align with international innovation and significantly enhance the efficiency of genomic data interpretation and consultation services.
On the technology front, Illumina leverages population-specific genetic backgrounds to further optimize and train its AI models, thereby improving interpretation accuracy. This partnership introduces an interactive AI platform based on the ChatGPT concept, employing state-of-the-art deep learning techniques to analyze individual whole genome sequences (VCF files). By integrating more than 50 patented technologies, the platform can automatically annotate, interpret, and provide insights on both common and rare diseases. Its large language model-driven interactive interface allows researchers, clinicians, and the general public to explore genomic data, gaining a deeper understanding of personal health traits and disease risks.
KIM FOREST emphasized that this collaboration with Illumina marks the beginning of joint efforts in AI applications, genomic data analysis, and software development. Moving forward, both parties will focus on expanding the use of AI platform technologies in multi-omics research for the Chinese population. This partnership aims to advance comprehensive genomic interpretation and healthcare services, further solidifying their leadership in precision medicine and AI-driven healthcare solutions.
