Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH) has once again secured a spot among the world's top 250 hospitals in the latest ranking released by Newsweek in collaboration with global data company Statista. In the World's Best Hospitals 2025 report, TVGH was ranked 208th globally, marking a significant advancement of 10 places from its 218th position in 2024. Notably, it remains the only hospital in Taiwan to be included in this prestigious global ranking.
This marks the second consecutive year that Taiwan has had a hospital represented in the global top 250. While National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) was previously featured in 2023, TVGH has been the sole representative for Taiwan for the past two years.
In response to the hospital's achievement, TVGH President Dr. Wei-Ming Chen expressed humility, acknowledging the dedication of the hospital staff. "We will continue to move forward with humility, strive for excellence, and foster collaboration for the well-being of all," he stated. He emphasized the hospital's commitment to providing a superior working environment for healthcare professionals and ensuring the highest standards of patient care.
The World's Best Hospitals ranking, first introduced in 2019, is now in its seventh year. The 2025 evaluation spanned 30 countries and territories, assessing 2,445 hospitals worldwide. Among Taiwanese hospitals, 35 institutions were included in the national ranking, with TVGH securing the top position with a score of 92.99%. NTUH followed closely in second place with 92.51%, while Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (90.54%), Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (89.72%), and Taichung Veterans General Hospital (89.43%) rounded out the top five.
According to Statista, the number of hospitals worldwide is projected to reach 215,977 by 2026. Newsweek emphasized the critical nature of hospital selection, particularly during medical emergencies or when dealing with serious diagnoses. To assist patients and their families in making informed decisions, the World’s Best Hospitals 2025 ranking aims to compare hospital reputations and performance across various nations.
The methodology for the World’s Best Hospitals ranking has evolved over time, incorporating diverse assessment metrics. This year, increased emphasis was placed on hospital quality indicators and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). The evaluation process integrated various accreditation benchmarks, including ANCC Magnet, Planetree, and ICONTEC certifications, while also leveraging expanded patient experience data sources and bibliometric scores to assess hospital excellence.
The 2025 rankings encompass leading hospitals across 30 countries, including the United States, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, and Taiwan. The selection of participating countries was based on multiple comparative factors, such as healthcare infrastructure, life expectancy, population size, hospital density, and data availability. Hospitals were evaluated based on a rigorous multi-faceted approach, which included online surveys of thousands of healthcare professionals—comprising physicians, hospital administrators, and medical experts—alongside patient experience data, hospital performance indicators, and PROM assessments.
PROM, a key factor in the ranking, refers to standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to assess their perceived functional health and quality of life. More than 2,400 hospitals participated in this year’s ranking, underscoring the importance of reliable, accessible data in making informed healthcare decisions. Newsweek expressed hope that the rankings will serve as a valuable resource for patients, families, and medical professionals seeking to identify top-tier healthcare institutions worldwide.
