Applied BioCode Sees Explosive Demand for Flu Testing in the U.S. MarketFeb 08, 2025

Applied BioCode (ABC) announced yesterday that this flu season has seen severe global impact, and since the fourth quarter of last year, Applied BioCode has been expanding its customer base to include laboratories focused on respiratory testing. Since January of this year, demand in the U.S. market has been particularly strong.

Applied BioCode's FDA-approved "20-Item Respiratory Pathogen Panel" (RPP) and automated diagnostic system (MDx 3000) can simultaneously identify up to 20 different infectious agents, including influenza viruses, parainfluenza, human metapneumovirus, mycoplasma, adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, and coronaviruses, helping patients receive the most appropriate treatment.

Applied BioCode stated that feedback from U.S. laboratory customers indicates that this flu season has seen a significant increase in patient visits, with multiple strains of the flu and other viruses circulating simultaneously. As a result, the 20-Item Respiratory Pathogen Panel has proven to be extremely useful. Compared to traditional rapid tests that only detect 1-3 types of flu viruses, which may still return a negative result even if the patient is infected, Applied BioCode's molecular diagnostic solution tests for 20 common pathogens in a single sample, eliminating the guesswork in identifying the infection source. This more comprehensive and cost-effective testing option, combined with the MDx 3000 automated diagnostic system, can process 188 respiratory samples in an 8-hour shift, making it ideal for large laboratories.

Applied BioCode explained that while their previous main customer base was focused on gastrointestinal testing, the respiratory testing market is the largest, and the company's multi-pathogen respiratory testing solution has begun to gain traction this year with increasing demand. Additionally, in January, the FDA approved the MDx 3000 for use with the U.S. market-leading nucleic acid extraction equipment. Many laboratory customers, facing high testing demand, have opted to purchase MDx 3000 instruments rather than rent them. Since last year, Applied BioCode has been expanding its presence with national laboratory groups and aims to enter the formal procurement stage this year, with high-margin infectious disease testing kits poised to offer significant business opportunities and become a major component of the product portfolio.
