The 27th National Biotechnology and Medicine Care Quality Award and the Symbol of National Quality (SNQ) certification have selected 31 teams in the categories of healthcare services and products this year, with the medical institution category being the most competitive. Notable breakthroughs were recognized in the early warning of cardiovascular emergencies, pancreatic cancer treatment, and gastric cancer prevention and control.
The Cardiology team from the Tri-Service General Hospital won the prestigious Silver Award, representing Asia’s top honor. The team developed and implemented an AI-based electrocardiogram analysis system for clinical use, creating an early warning system to detect mortality risks. This system can accurately identify 29 cardiovascular diseases and 24 types of arrhythmias, achieving an accuracy rate of 0.828 to 0.988. This innovation has led to a 17% reduction in the hospital's overall mortality rate, with related research published in the Nature Medicine journal in 2024.
In pancreatic cancer treatment, the Pancreatic Treatment and Research Center at Taipei Veterans General Hospital also received the Silver Award. The center has made significant strides in addressing pancreatic cancer, a disease with an exceptionally high mortality rate. By employing cutting-edge approaches such as robotic Da Vinci surgery, chemotherapy, phototherapy, and heavy particle therapy, the center has increased the 5-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer patients from 5-10% to 36.9%.
Additionally, the Gastroenterology Department at National Taiwan University Hospital earned the Silver Award in the Hospital Community Service category for its globally pioneering systematic Helicobacter pylori screening program, which has successfully prevented the onset of gastric cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) has incorporated Taiwan’s experience into its global gastric cancer prevention strategy report. This initiative has been expanded to 18 counties and cities, including 55 indigenous communities. In Matsu, the screening coverage has reached 90%, reducing gastric cancer incidence by 55% and mortality by 36%.
