Anya Biopharm has made another significant move in the oral weight loss drug market. On December 9, the company announced the licensing of its first commercialized product, ANY002, an oral GLP-1 peptide formulation developed using its proprietary oral peptide platform, to a major South Korean pharmaceutical company. This collaboration aims to enter the North Asian market.
Following its earlier exclusive licensing agreements with international pharmaceutical companies for markets including Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, and India, Anya Biopharm has now secured an exclusive licensing deal for the South Korean market. Under the agreement, Anya Biopharm will receive an upfront payment, milestone payments, and additional compensation throughout the contract period.
The company stated that the specific terms of the agreement remain confidential due to a mutual non-disclosure arrangement. With the South Korean partner’s expertise in product registration, market access, and rapid commercialization, Anya Biopharm expects to benefit from this collaboration to accelerate the commercialization and sales of ANY002 in South Korea, thus positively impacting the company’s financial performance and business development. As per Anya Biopharm’s partner selection criteria, the South Korean partner is a mature pharmaceutical company with strong manufacturing capabilities and ambitious market goals.
Anya Biopharm pointed out that the GLP-1 market in South Korea was valued at approximately $130 million in 2023, ranking third in the region after China and Japan. The market has an annual growth rate of 4.5%, which is significantly higher than Japan’s, and the South Korean government’s full support for the biotech industry and relatively fast regulatory approval processes make the market optimistic for product launch.
Anya Biopharm’s oral peptide platform has wide-ranging applications. After licensing ANY002 in Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, India, and South Korea, the company is actively negotiating licensing agreements for other markets, including China, Latin America, and Eastern Europe.
The company also mentioned that the GLP-1 market for treating type 2 diabetes and weight loss is experiencing soaring demand. This shortage has prompted major companies like Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly to urgently expand their production lines to resolve the supply issues.
