On November 25, PuriBlood, a company listed on the Emerging Stock Market in Taiwan, announced that it has signed clinical trial and exclusive distribution agreements with the Brazilian Association of Hematology, Hemotherapy, and Cell Therapy (ABHH) and Cromo Comercio and Distribuicao de Materiais Odonto-Medico Hospitlares Ltda. (Cromo), a major medical distributor in Brazil. This marks PuriBlood's formal entry into Brazil, the largest blood market in South America.
PuriBlood is Taiwan's only developer of leukocyte filters and blood bags. Formosa Plastics Group holds a 10% stake in the company, with its subsidiary, Nan Ya Plastics, responsible for producing blood bags and related products. Nan Ya's production line began trial production in Q4 this year.
PuriBlood Chairman Chen Yen-Wen highlighted that Brazil is the first major single-market milestone for the company, with a supply-demand scale surpassing that of Taiwan. As the gateway to the Latin American market, Brazil's clinical and healthcare systems, which are modeled after U.S. standards, also provide a strong foundation for PuriBlood's future expansion into North America and Europe. Through its partnership with Cromo, PuriBlood aims to distribute its products to blood bank groups such as Pulsa and major hospitals in Brazil.
Chen also emphasized that ABHH will collaborate with PuriBlood on clinical research for Real-Time Leukocyte Reduction Filters and High Platelet Recovery Whole Blood Filters. Meanwhile, Cromo, a leading supplier of leukocyte filters and blood bags in Brazil, operates in a market with an annual demand of six million units. With this collaboration, PuriBlood expects to supply two million units annually to the local market starting next year.
Cromo Chairman Shih Ming-Chi, a Taiwanese Brazilian, noted that Taiwan's blood donation rate has consistently ranked among the highest globally at 8%, yielding approximately 1.8 million blood bags annually. In comparison, Brazil's market processes about 5–6 million blood bags per year, with the potential for continued growth driven by blood donation promotion policies. He expressed confidence that PuriBlood’s advanced leukocyte filters will perform strongly in Brazil due to their exceptional efficiency.
The ABHH, a national alliance with over 4,000 members, comprises professionals in hematology, hemotherapy, and cell therapy. The association actively promotes cell and gene therapies, such as CAR-T cell therapy for blood cancer, and participates in related research and policy-making. It collaborates with Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) to establish regulatory frameworks for clinical applications of cell therapies.
Based in São Paulo, Cromo specializes in the wholesale distribution of equipment and supplies for medical, dental, and healthcare institutions. The company provides essential materials and devices for hospitals, laboratories, and surgical procedures, making it a key player in Brazil's healthcare market.
