Unveiling a New 360-Degree Rotating Hook to Prevent IV Bag and Drainage Tube Entanglement!Aug 15, 2024

A team led by Dr. Wen-Yu Hu from the National Taiwan University Hospital has developed the "Easy Hook—360-Degree Rotating Height-Adjustable Hook," designed to address common issues associated with traditional IV stands and drainage bag hooks. The standout features of this innovative design include its 360-degree rotation capability, which effectively prevents urinary catheter tubes from tangling. Additionally, the adjustable height function allows healthcare professionals to easily change the hook’s position as needed, facilitating urine bag drainage and urine observation, and significantly improving the comfort and efficiency of nursing tasks. The Easy Hook’s detachable design enables compatibility with poles of various diameters, making it suitable for mobile IV stands, walkers, and wheelchairs. This versatility and compatibility fill a gap in the market, solving issues of tube entanglement and preventing urine bags from touching the ground.

Enhancing Patient Safety and Reducing Infection Risks with Innovative Hook Design

Traditional hook designs often positioned too low, which could cause urinary catheter tubes to be pulled or tangled when patients get out of bed, increasing the risk of falls and infections. Dr. Wen-Yu Hu explained that the team aimed to create a product that significantly improves the experience for both patients and healthcare workers. In the past, patients using traditional hooks had to frequently squat down to check their urine, while also worrying about their catheter tubes getting tangled—a particularly challenging task for elderly or mobility-impaired patients.

The Easy Hook’s 360-degree rotation feature allows it to move freely with the patient, effectively preventing tube pulling or tangling. Moreover, its adjustable height function enables healthcare workers to empty urine bags and observe their contents without bending over, significantly reducing the risk of the urine bag’s outlet coming into contact with the ground, thereby lowering the chances of urinary tract infections. This product was developed using computer-aided design and 3D printing technology for prototyping. It has undergone extensive testing for weight-bearing, rotation, quick disassembly, and clinical trials, proving its ability to address functional gaps in existing products while enhancing tube safety. Dr. Hu also added that this technology not only improves nursing efficiency but also offers a more user-friendly experience for elderly patients, and the team is confident about its future market prospects.

A Key Innovation for Enhancing Patient Safety and Nursing Efficiency

Dr. Hu highlighted that this innovative product not only enhances the efficiency of medical care and the patient experience but also has the potential for widespread use in hospitals and long-term care facilities, becoming an essential tool for all patients using urinary catheter bags. Throughout the development process, the team received support from patent firms, consultants, and various manufacturers. These partners provided valuable input on product design and functionality testing, supported patent applications, and met financial needs. The team actively participated in various competitions and exhibitions, such as the "Power of Nursing" International Nursing Innovation Awards and medical expos, which not only increased the product's visibility but also boosted market awareness. To promote the product's market launch and sales, the team will continue to build long-term partnerships with hospital bed, IV stand, and drainage bag manufacturers. By addressing clinical issues such as falls and infections caused by competing products, they hope to make this product a standard feature in the future.
