The Early Intervention Evaluation Center at MacKay Memorial Hospital, led by Dr. Hui-Ju Chen, has developed the "ONE Online Child Development Intelligent Assessment System." This system utilizes smart question selection and personalized evaluation to precisely monitor the developmental status of children aged 0 to 6. It not only screens for developmental delays but also assesses the "developmental age" in various domains, providing personalized advice. This system is expected to become a comprehensive and real-time evaluation tool for parents, healthcare professionals, and early intervention workers.
Rising Rates of Developmental Delay Highlight Limitations of Current Assessment Tools
The incidence of developmental delays in children is increasing yearly, making early detection and intervention crucial. However, current online developmental questionnaires mainly focus on screening and cannot provide accurate developmental assessments and classifications. Traditional assessment methods are time-consuming and labor-intensive, requiring specific locations and professional personnel, making them difficult to implement in remote areas. As a result, many children miss the critical window for early intervention.
Six Domains of Assessment with Smart Question Selection for Personalized Evaluation
The ONE system's question bank includes 461 questions covering six developmental domains: gross motor skills, fine motor skills, language comprehension, language expression, cognition, and social-emotional development, applicable to children aged 2 months to 6 years. Unlike existing screening tools, this system employs a smart question selection mechanism that adjusts question difficulty based on parents' answers, creating a personalized evaluation process. It can screen developmental status (such as normal development, borderline development, or developmental delay) and assess the "developmental age" in the six domains, enabling parents to monitor their child's development progress at any time.
Moreover, the ONE system uses a responsive web design, allowing users to conduct assessments anytime and anywhere using electronic devices. The front-end module provides a user-friendly interface and rich interactive experience, including multimedia-assisted assessments and visual presentation of evaluation results. The back-end system boasts robust management features to ensure stable operation, data security, and continuous optimization based on user feedback.
Localized Question Design with Potential for Widespread Adoption
Dr. Hui-Ju Chen stated that the ONE system's questions are designed to reflect the living experiences of Taiwanese children, making the assessment results more accurate. Parents can regularly track their child's development through remote evaluations, clearly understanding their progress and changes over time, identifying issues early, and providing appropriate guidance. Currently, the system has been used 629 times, achieving an accuracy rate of 92% and a precision rate of 98.8%, with a sensitivity of 93.3%. This provides a convenient assessment tool for parents and a more efficient evaluation method for healthcare professionals and early intervention workers. In the future, the ONE system is expected to be integrated into national child development screening programs and promoted to various service units, ensuring that children across the country, including those in remote areas, benefit from comprehensive developmental assessments and care.
