First Healthy Ageing Tech Show to Launch in AugustJul 10, 2024

By 2025, Taiwan's population aged 65 and above is expected to reach 4.85 million, accounting for 20.8% of the total population, officially making it a super-aged society. Recognizing the "longevity economy" as the next significant industrial trend, the inaugural Healthy Ageing Tech Show, co-organized by the Institute for Biotechnology and Medicine Industry, Research Center for Biotechnology and Medicine Policy, Industrial Development Administration, Ministry of Economic Affairs, the National Health Research Institutes, and the Administration for Digital Industries, Ministry of Digital Affairs, will take place from August 2 to 4 at Taipei World Trade Center Hall 1.

This event will integrate the telecommunications, financial, and healthcare industries, featuring participation from over 200 companies and institutions across 735 booths. In addition to technology and biomedical firms, sectors such as life insurance, banking, tourism, and textiles will also be represented, covering essential aspects of daily life.

Jong-Chin Shen, convener of the show's organizing committee and IBMI advisor, highlighted that while Taiwan is entering a super-aged society, the average unhealthy life expectancy of Taiwanese people is as high as 8 years, posing a significant burden on the nation, society, and families. Helping citizens maintain a healthy and happy longevity economy will be a critical industrial trend in the coming years.

Jong-Chin Shen noted that by 2025, the global population aged 65 and above is projected to reach 2 billion. Currently, one-quarter of Taiwan's counties and cities have already entered a super-aged society ahead of schedule, with the elderly population expected to reach 4.85 million by 2025. This demographic shift presents a massive opportunity for the silver economy, with the global market for senior-related industries expected to exceed trillions of dollars, and Taiwan's market alone estimated to reach 3.6 trillion NTD.

Jong-Chin Shen emphasized that, similar to the power industry's preparation through foundational skills, coupled with trends in new energy, grid reform, and the exclusion of the red supply chain by the U.S., the senior health industry also requires proactive preparation. This involves cross-ministerial collaboration to integrate various sectors, encouraging participation from the information and communications technology (ICT) and financial industries, and incorporating senior technology product design. These products and services will be commercialized and tested in different living environments to better meet the needs of the elderly, accelerating the development of inclusive service solutions.
