Forming the biomedical kingdom of Formosa Plastics in Q2May 13, 2024

Formosa Plastics Group's "Biomedical Healthcare" layout is stepping up its efforts. Under the leadership of Wang Rui-Yu, a member of the Formosa Plastics Enterprise Management Committee and Chairman of Formosa Biomedical Technology, in addition to accelerating the strategy of integrating production, medicine, and academia, Formosa Biomedical Technology will initiate a new wave of major investments. It plans to invest between 1 billion to 1.5 billion NT dollars to establish the "Yilan Biotech Park," including layouts such as advanced medical materials and bioc chip factories. The aim is to finalize the cooperation framework with partners in the second quarter and complement it with subsequent capacity building, realizing the grand plan for the biotech park's development.

This project is also the largest investment case for Formosa Biomedical Technology in recent years after investing 1.2 billion NT dollars in shares of Link Health Pharmaceuticals and Link Asia Pharmaceuticals.

It is reported that Formosa Biomedical Technology's "Biotech Park" will promote projects such as advanced medical materials, next-generation diagnostic reagents, and cell factories through modes of cooperation such as equity participation and joint ventures. Among them, the advanced medical materials project will adopt technology from Probiotec Biomedical as the main shareholder, with Formosa Biomedical Technology holding the majority stake, jointly establishing a new company to promote the development of specialized medical materials for precision testing (such as blood collection tubes, virus filters), and then through a contract manufacturing model, Formosa Biomedical Technology will establish production lines.

Next-generation diagnostic reagents projects will involve Formosa Biomedical Technology's investment in biotech testing companies, initiating cooperation and exchange, and subsequently, through a contract manufacturing model, Formosa Biomedical Technology will establish production lines to expand strategic alliances. The cell factory is in response to the investment in Ivy Life Sciences, integrating the unique technologies of Chang Gung Medical Team in the field of regenerative medicine to support the expansion of cell therapy and gene therapy fields.

Aiming at the trend of the development of precision medicine under Taiwan's special management law, Formosa Biomedical Technology is expanding the "internationalization of the brand" and the operational energy of the "biotech park" through investment layouts such as AI applications, advanced medical materials, stem cells, and the investment in biochip factories.

To this end, Formosa Biomedical Technology invests in "Maxigen Biotech" to develop various types of artificial tissue implants (including artificial bones, collagen, etc.); takes over "Ivy Life Sciences" to conduct research on cell therapy, invests in cell therapy startups such as Apexcella Biomedical, researches gene therapy, and develops a complete chain of cell therapy with the backing of Chang Gung University and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. As cell therapy requires clinical trial sites in hospitals, those who control hospital resources have an advantage, making it highly anticipated. Formosa Biomedical Technology also leverages partner resources such as Probiotec Biomedical to expand layouts such as advanced medical materials and biochip factories, which are key strategies.

Formosa Biomedical Technology will use the current site of the Yilan Factory, which covers nearly 3.1 hectares of land, as the site for the "Biotech Park," planning automated production lines for diagnostic reagents, and evaluating the establishment of next-generation diagnostic reagents and specialized medical material production lines. Based on the needs of regenerative medicine and the development of various protein drugs and reagents, it will establish large-scale CDMO (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization) capacity.
