In recent years, with the prevalence of upper respiratory tract viruses and cardiovascular diseases, issues related to cardiopulmonary health have been increasingly emphasized. Although traditional wearable electrocardiographic sensors and chest strap respiratory sensors can measure cardiopulmonary signals, prolonged wearing of patch electrodes and straps may cause discomfort such as skin allergies and chest pressure.
The team led by Prof. Ting-Wei Wang of National Tsing Hua University has developed a wearable pocket-sized completely contactless cardiopulmonary sensor. It utilizes electromagnetic induction technology to measure the vortex damping signals generated by heart contraction and relaxation and changes in lung volume to extract heart and respiratory signals. Subsequently, it calculates important cardiopulmonary indicators such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, lung capacity, and cardiopulmonary coordination index.
