Interconnecting AI in healthcare: Kaohsiung Medical University achieves new milestone in "Smart Healthcare"Mar 21, 2024

The continuous development of digital technology is reshaping the landscape of the healthcare industry, especially with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), which has become the cornerstone of smart healthcare. In recent years, Kaohsiung Medical University has established the "Office for the Promotion of Intelligent Healthcare" to actively promote the development of smart healthcare. On the 20th, they showcased innovative achievements in smart healthcare, unveiling a series of accomplishments focusing on interconnecting patient care journeys, including "Smart Outpatient Care," "Smart Inpatient Care," "Smart Emergency Care," "Smart Surgical Care," and "Smart Operational Management."

President Jaw-yuan Wang stated that Kaohsiung Medical University is actively focusing on the comprehensive development of AI-driven smart healthcare and applying it to various areas such as emergency and critical care, intensive care units, intelligent management of surgical anesthesia, telemedicine in remote areas, generative intelligent nursing records, and collaborative handover records for medical staff. With the assistance of artificial intelligence, it is possible to predict high-risk diseases, thereby enhancing healthcare quality and patient safety. To improve the efficiency and quality of healthcare personnel, Kaohsiung Medical University is committed to using smart technology to create a happy workplace and actively cultivate medical AI talents. The results developed by the AI team are being practically applied, reducing the workload of clinical staff and thereby increasing employee retention rates.

Intensive care units have always been one of the most complex environments in hospitals, where critically ill patients facing life-threatening conditions require comprehensive intelligent monitoring. Led by Professor Tsai Ming-Ju from the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Kaohsiung Medical University's healthcare system has established a new generation of intelligent intensive care unit teams, based on medical big data, to construct intelligent information systems to enhance care quality. The new generation ICU system incorporates human factors engineering, and after its implementation, significant improvements have been observed. The achievements received the Silver Award at the 2023 National Healthcare Quality Awards, bringing multiple benefits such as organizational culture and workflow reconstruction, and the system continues to be updated to provide safer and more effective medical care.

Vice President Tsung-hsien Lin stated that Kaohsiung Medical University will continue to provide innovative services at the level of "Smart Hospitals," further enhancing the efficiency and quality of healthcare work, and strengthening public health protection. In recent years, Kaohsiung Medical University has achieved remarkable success in the field of smart healthcare. In 2022, it was awarded the Smart Hospital Institutional Badge by the Taiwan Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation, becoming one of only two hospitals in Taiwan to receive this badge that year, alongside National Taiwan University Hospital. Additionally, on July 25, 2023, it passed the HIMSS EMRAM Level 6 international certification, becoming the first healthcare institution in southern Taiwan to do so. Furthermore, on February 27, 2024, it received the "Outstanding Operation Award" at the 27th National Quality Award of the Executive Yuan, making it the first healthcare institution in southern Taiwan to receive multiple honors.
