Chinese language medical AI diagnosis system implemented in Taiwan hospitalJul 25, 2023

Taiwan’s China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) is collaborating with Microsoft on the gHi system, the world’s first Chinese language AI e-health system, which launched on Monday.

The gHi system accesses a glossary of professional terms to generate medical diagnoses with an accuracy of up to 90%. It is able to give recommendations and suggest treatments according to the patient’s complaints.

The CMUH AI center director Hsu Kai-cheng (許凱程) said that it took more than a year to develop the system. Over 100 hours of nursing discourse was collected to better identify the names of diseases, drugs, and treatments in both Chinese and English. Also, gHi can compile medical diagnoses in only 10 minutes compared to the 20-30 minutes that personnel require.

Hsu further explained that it can be distracting for a doctor to observe patients’ conditions and type simultaneously. The gHi system would allow doctors to make eye contact and talk face to face with patients. All that is required is a clinic smartphone with the program, which will automatically generate medical diagnoses according to their conversation.

Hospital director Cho Der-yang (周德陽) emphasized that the system is not intentionally designed to replace doctors. Instead, it should help supplement information during diagnoses and enhance the efficiency of medical services.
