The Cell Therapy Centre, opened on 18 January and operated by Taipei Medical University- Shuang Ho Hospital, providing patients with an important alternative to conventional medical treatment. Cell therapy can be applied to combat cancer cells, as well as immune cell therapy, including joint repair, such as degenerative arthritis or cartilage cell regeneration; epidermal or subcutaneous tissue repair, such as skin burns; eye treatment, such as retinal regeneration; and neurological regeneration, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
According to the hospital, the first is the application of regenerative medicine, where autoimmune cells are isolated from the body, cultured in large numbers outside the body (e.g. in laboratory culture) and then returned to the patient's body to fight cancer cells; and the second is the application of immune cell therapy, where the differentiation of stem cells is exploited and the differentiation of stem cells can be induced through technology. The second type of applied immune cell therapy is the use of stem cell differentiation, which can be used to achieve organ repair or tissue regeneration by technically inducing stem cells to differentiate into the type of cells desired for treatment, including joint repair, such as degenerative arthritis or cartilage cell regeneration; epidermal or subcutaneous tissue repair, such as skin burns; eye treatment, such as retinal regeneration; and neural cell regeneration, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
With the introduction of the amended provisions of the "Regulations for the Administration and Use of Medical Devices for Specific Purposes" (hereinafter referred to as the Special Regulations), autologous chondrocyte technology is becoming more and more sophisticated, allowing patients to regain their "knee" hopes, reduce knee problems and enjoy a better life. The use of cultured autologous epithelial cells in the treatment of severe burns, for instance, has been proven to be highly effective in Taiwan.
In Taiwan, cell therapy has gradually become a new trend in cancer and regenerative medicine after the adoption of relevant regulations, providing doctors and patients with more options for regenerative medicine techniques and products for diseases that cannot be cured by conventional medicine.
Cancer has long been among the top 10 causes of death in Taiwan. Currently, Shuang Ho Hospital has seven cell therapy projects approved by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, five of which have been reviewed by local authorities; nine cell therapy projects are currently under review by the Ministry of Health and Welfare; and four are in preparation.
In the future, the Hospital will deepen the depth and breadth of cell therapy technology and complete cell therapy in all areas of treatment, including cancer, spinal injuries, stroke, knee injuries, skin defects, chronic wounds and burns.
