NTU Hospital Unveils AI Liquid Biopsy for Pancreatic Cancer with Over 93% AccuracyMar 02, 2026

Pancreatic cancer, often called the "King of Cancers," is notoriously difficult to detect early, with 85% of cases diagnosed at advanced stages. National Taiwan University (NTU) Hospital, in collaboration with Academia Sinica, has developed PanMETAI, an AI-driven diagnostic tool that requires only 0.1ml of blood to detect the disease.

  • Addressing Clinical Pain Points: Current biomarkers like CA19-9 have an accuracy rate below 80%. In contrast, PanMETAI leverages whole-genome metabolomic signaling and AI to achieve a 93% accuracy rate, identifying pre-cancerous lesions and early-stage metabolic signatures.
  • Global Validation: The study, published in Nature Communications, utilized retrospective data from 1,224 subjects across Taiwan and Lithuania. The successful validation in the Lithuanian cohort demonstrates the system's applicability across different ethnicities and lifestyles.
  • Next Steps: NTU Hospital Vice President Ho Yi-Luan stated that while the system acts as an "early warning system," the team is continuing clinical trials to secure TFDA approval for routine clinical use.
