NHI Implements Three New Policies with NT$370M Funding; Proton Therapy for Pediatric Cancer Included for the First TimeJan 13, 2026

The National Health Insurance (NHI) Administration launched three major programs on January 1, 2026, covering lipid management, pediatric proton therapy, and trauma surgery bonuses. Total funding reaches NT$370 million, benefiting an estimated 34,000 patients annually.

  • High Lipid Levels (ASCVD) Management: To combat Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD), the NHI introduced a "pay-for-performance" model. It incentivizes medical institutions with 500–2,000 points per case for tracking "extremely high-risk" and "very high-risk" patients, with an additional 1,000-point referral fee.
  • Pediatric Proton Therapy: For the first time, the NHI will cover proton therapy for pediatric cancers, which offers higher precision and lower risk of secondary cancers compared to traditional radiation. Payments are tiered by dosage: 676k, 1.03M, and 1.26M points, benefiting approximately 100 children per year.
  • Major Trauma Surgery: To strengthen emergency resilience, surgeries performed within 2 hours of ER admission receive a 100% bonus; those within 2–4 hours receive a 60% bonus.
