In a global market dominated by high-end ophthalmic device giants such as Zeiss and Topcon, Taiwan’s local brand Crystalvue Medical has successfully carved out a niche by leveraging three key advantages: mid-range pricing, full automation, and high quality. Today, its products are sold in more than 80 countries, including distant markets such as Nigeria.
“We’re not competing with Zeiss on brand prestige, nor are we adopting China’s low-price model. We’re targeting the mid-range market with a user-centric approach that speaks through technology and service,” emphasized CP Chuang, COO of Crystalvue Medical.
Leading in Automation: Solving After-Sales Challenges with Remote Maintenance
Crystalvue specializes in ophthalmic diagnostic equipment known for its simplicity and ease of use. All of its products feature one-touch operation and full automation, enabling even non-ophthalmologists to operate the devices with ease. This is particularly valuable in international markets—especially in remote or underserved regions—where skilled technicians may be scarce.
“Our devices are deployed in Nigeria. If customers encounter operational or equipment issues, our technical team can remotely connect, analyze log records, and resolve problems in real time,” said Chuang.
This seamless integration of IT with medical device design has significantly enhanced global service efficiency and helped overcome traditional maintenance barriers.
Bringing High-End OCT Features to Clinics at Mid-Range Prices
Historically, the essential tools for an eye clinic included a slit lamp, autorefractor, and tonometer. In recent years, fundus cameras have become increasingly common. However, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)—a tool that provides high-resolution cross-sectional images of the retina—has typically been limited to large hospitals or well-funded clinics due to its high cost.
Crystalvue’s next-generation OCT utilizes Fourier Domain OCT (FD-OCT) technology, offering 80kHz high-speed scanning and 3D auto-tracking capabilities, which enable precise imaging even if the patient’s eye moves. By offering high-spec OCT systems at competitive price points, Crystalvue empowers eye care professionals to perform affordable, efficient, and accurate diagnoses.

Full-Service CDMO: From Design to Debugging
In addition to its own brand, Crystalvue is one of the few manufacturers globally capable of providing high-end ophthalmic device CDMO (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization) services. Its Taiwan-based team handles every aspect in-house, including optical modules, circuit design, imaging software, and mechanical engineering.
Crystalvue’s fundus camera now holds over 5% of the global market share, and the company has maintained long-term partnerships with leading OCT brands for over a decade.
“To develop imaging medical devices, you need expertise in optics, mechanical design, software, and—most importantly—an understanding of actual clinical workflows. Only then can you create truly valuable clinical tools,” said Chuang.
He emphasized that this cross-disciplinary integration is why many international brands choose Crystalvue as their long-term partner.

Strategic AI Partnerships to Expand Global Reach
When discussing AI integration in medical devices, Chuang noted that Crystalvue’s fundus camera now partners with Acer Medical’s AI diagnostic software. This collaboration began with diabetic retinopathy detection, and is now expanding to include glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and even cardiovascular-related screenings.
AI regulatory compliance remains a major hurdle in global markets. For example, in Europe, AI software can obtain independent CE certification and be sold with various brands of fundus cameras. In contrast, U.S. regulations require AI software to be certified together with its hardware, making market entry more complex.
To address these challenges, Crystalvue has partnered with several strategic collaborators to adapt and integrate AI solutions tailored to local regulatory requirements—further advancing its position in smart global healthcare.
