Acer Enters Central American Smart Healthcare Market, Aiding Early Screening for Diabetic RetinopathyMay 23, 2025

Acer Medical announced yesterday that it has once again expanded its international presence. Its “non-mydriatic automated fundus camera ARC-1000” and “AI-assisted diabetic retinopathy diagnostic software VeriSee DR” have recently been introduced in Belize, one of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies in Central America. These tools are being used to support the Belize Council for the Visually Impaired, a key public eye care institution, in enhancing early screening capabilities for diabetic retinopathy.

According to Acer, this initiative is part of the “Belize Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Project,” jointly promoted by the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF), Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, and Belize’s Ministry of Health & Wellness. Acer Medical was invited to participate by providing AI-driven smart healthcare solutions. Through this collaborative effort, the project aims to strengthen Belize’s healthcare system for managing metabolic and chronic diseases. Non-communicable diseases account for approximately 65% of deaths in Belize, with diabetic retinopathy—one of the major complications of diabetes—ranking among the top three causes of blindness in the country. By introducing Acer Medical’s integrated AI-powered hardware and software solution, the project enhances frontline screening for eye diseases and lays a more solid foundation for Belize’s national health management efforts.

VeriSee DR, developed by Acer Medical, is an AI fundus image analysis software and the first AI-based ophthalmology medical device approved by Taiwan’s FDA. It assists physicians in image interpretation and accelerates referral decisions. Its ability to operate without internet access makes it especially suitable for resource-limited areas. In this project, VeriSee DR is deployed alongside the ARC-1000 automated fundus camera in Belize, enabling community-level health institutions to conduct screenings more efficiently and widely, significantly improving both workflow and coverage.

With its ophthalmology AI applications being implemented in more international markets, Acer Medical plans to continue expanding the global footprint of its smart healthcare solutions.

Currently, Acer Medical’s AI-assisted screening software has been adopted by over 450 hospitals across more than 13 economies worldwide. The company stated it will further accelerate its efforts to reach more developing countries and remote regions.
