On May 14, Abnova announced the successful development of RNAFlex, an integrated automated RNA production platform. Since the advent of COVID-19 vaccines, mRNA has rapidly established itself in the public domain as a novel class of biologics, recognized for its efficacy and safety. This success has spurred the rapid expansion of RNA-based biotechnologies across fields such as immunotherapy, cell therapy, and gene editing.
Abnova noted that RNA synthesis and purification remain largely manual processes in translational research, drug development, and preclinical studies. However, these labor-intensive procedures, requiring precise control, continue to be hindered by RNA’s inherent instability, susceptibility to degradation and contamination, and the significant variability in yield and quality—factors that have limited its broader application.
RNAFlex addresses these challenges by integrating five core hardware modules, a comprehensive liquid handling system, a highly flexible robotic arm, and robust software capabilities. It encompasses all critical steps of RNA production, including in vitro transcription, capping, cleanup, oligo dT purification, and cellulose-based purification. The system is equipped with pre-validated RNA reagents, kits, and consumables, ensuring user-friendly operation and optimal biocompatibility. While similar in concept to established DNA automation platforms, RNA automation has long posed significant technical and biological challenges and has yet to be commercialized—until now.
RNAFlex efficiently supports the production of major RNA types, including self-amplifying messenger RNA (SAM), messenger RNA (mRNA), and circular RNA (circRNA), ensuring consistent yield and quality. This enables faster evaluation of pharmacological efficacy and biological activity, advancing progress in translational medicine and drug development.
The platform can also be upgraded to GMP specifications, supporting scaled-up processes required for GLP-compliant toxicology and pharmacokinetic preclinical studies. As a highly flexible and open system, RNAFlex offers user-driven customization to meet the evolving demands of the RNA market. Abnova has filed for global patent protection covering the design, components, and applications of RNAFlex.
