Quantum computing has become the new darling of the market, with Taiwan's electronics manufacturing services (EMS) actively investing in this area. Following Foxconn's continuous breakthroughs in quantum research and Quanta's increased investments in quantum computers, Compal Electronics has also made significant strides. On the 7th, Compal announced that its quantum-inspired computing service, Compal GPU Annealer, received funding from the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and is part of a digital annealing development project led by National Cheng Kung University. The collaboration will accelerate the development of quantum-inspired computing applications, such as large-scale deployment in drug development and semiconductor production optimization.
Compal explained that the Compal GPU Annealer is a quantum-inspired computing product that uses GPU acceleration to solve complex problems that traditional computing cannot handle efficiently. It can be applied in multiple fields, including financial investments, manufacturing management, and biomedical technology.
Compal also highlighted its cooperation with the national quantum team in various fields to research quantum-inspired computing applications. For instance, in the biomedical field, it aims to accelerate compound molecular interaction analysis, precisely predict and screen candidate compounds, and improve the success rate of compound experiments. In the semiconductor industry, it addresses optimization problems such as mask design and process optimization, enhancing manufacturing efficiency.
Seeing the immense potential and industry prospects of quantum computing, other companies like Foxconn and Quanta are also making significant moves. Foxconn, through its Foxconn Technology Research Institute, is responsible for quantum computing research and has made major breakthroughs, such as recent research results in quantum computing and quantum circuits published in Nature Communications. Recently, Foxconn introduced a new quantum parameter adaptation (QPA) method, which supports the feasibility of quantum computing in real-world applications.
Foxconn Chairman Yang Wei Liu previously stated that Foxconn is fully committed to the development of quantum computers, with plans to expand into four major areas: quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing, and quantum simulation.
To deepen its quantum computing investments, Quanta announced in February that it would invest over NT$1.1 billion in U.S. quantum computing technology developer Rigetti Computing. The two companies plan to invest over $100 million each over the next five years to combine their strengths and collaborate on the development of superconducting quantum computing technology.
