To enhance the quality of critical care and reduce the burden on medical staff, China Medical University Hospital has developed the HiThings Tele-ICU, a smart intensive care command center. This system integrates Medical AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things) technology to offer more precise clinical decision support through data integration, AI-powered predictions, and remote monitoring. As the intensive care unit (ICU) is one of the most demanding areas in healthcare, this innovative solution aims to address key challenges, improve staff efficiency, and deliver better patient outcomes.
Feng Wen-Sheng, Director of the Office of Digital Transformation and Technology, stated that the HiThings Tele-ICU is capable of real-time integration and analysis of data from more than 60,000 medical devices. It combines patients’ physiological data, imaging, prescriptions, and lab reports, using a digital twin 3D human model to provide dynamic monitoring and physiological status analysis in real time.
With the help of AI-powered prediction tools, the system can quickly identify high-risk patients with conditions such as sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and myocardial infarction. This enables medical teams to intervene earlier, significantly increasing survival rates. The system also incorporates high-resolution remote video technology to support real-time mobile monitoring and teleconsultation, enhancing clinical responsiveness.
Dr. Wei-Cheng Chen, Chief Secretary, explained that the HiThings Tele-ICU has been deployed in respiratory, cardiac, and surgical ICUs, yielding significant results: ICU mortality rates have decreased by 5.4%, ARDS mortality by 18.9%, and mortality from drug-resistant sepsis by 17.6%. In addition to improving care quality, the system has effectively reduced the workload of medical staff—data retrieval time has dropped by 44%, medical documentation time by 60%, and shift handover efficiency has improved by 62%. This allows healthcare professionals to devote more time to patient care, further enhancing medical quality and efficiency.
Through the HiThings Tele-ICU, China Medical University Hospital is not only optimizing its critical care model but also deepening the integration of AI and digital technologies. This initiative lays a solid foundation for the future of smart healthcare, ensuring continued improvements in care quality and positioning Taiwan as a leader in the global smart healthcare arena.
