Precise Torque Control for Orthopedic Wire Fixation: Enhancing Surgical Efficiency and AccuracyMar 23, 2025

In modern orthopedic surgery, wire fixation techniques are widely used for procedures involving fractures of the patella, olecranon, and oblique long bone fractures. Traditionally, tightening these wires relies heavily on manual operation using various wire pliers or clamps to achieve surgical objectives. However, these tools present challenges in meeting the precision and speed required during surgery, often depending on the surgeon’s experience to ensure the correct tension of the wire during the tightening process.

Technological Innovation: The Precision Control and Advantages of the Tensionlock Wire Tightener

To address these challenges, Dr. Lin, Sheng-Chieh and his team at Chung Shan Medical University Hospital have developed the Tensionlock wire tightener. This innovative device features precise torque control, solving three major pain points in traditional wire fixation: double-wire twisting, rapid knotting, and torque limitation. The core technology lies in its unique automatic release mechanism, which disengages automatically once the preset torque is reached. This ensures the wire is neither overtightened nor too loose, providing a more stable and secure fixation.

The device also features a dual-axis twisting design, allowing for precise torque settings and compatibility with wires of varying diameters, offering excellent flexibility for different orthopedic procedures. Additionally, the Tensionlock is equipped with a power-assisted quick-clamp connector, significantly reducing the time surgeons spend manually twisting the wire. This enhancement greatly improves surgical efficiency while increasing precision and safety. It also reduces physical strain on surgeons, helping to alleviate their workload. After initial 3D-printed prototype development, the product has now entered its second-generation refinement phase and is undergoing clinical testing. It is expected to become an essential tool in orthopedic surgeries in the near future.

Expert Interview: Future Plans and Market Prospects

Dr. Lin emphasized that the development of the Tensionlock wire tightener stems from a strong focus on surgical precision and efficiency. While current wire fixation techniques are well-established, they still face accuracy limitations. The design concept behind Tensionlock is to resolve this issue through precise torque control, enabling surgeons to perform wire fixation quickly and accurately without being constrained by experience levels.

Looking ahead, Dr. Lin mentioned that the Tensionlock’s applications extend beyond orthopedics. It has significant market potential in other fields requiring wire-based surgical procedures, such as cardiac surgery. The product has already entered the Taiwan medical market and plans are underway to expand through technology licensing and collaboration with manufacturers in mainland China. Dr. Lin is confident that as Taiwan’s orthopedic market continues its steady growth, the Tensionlock wire tightener will become standard equipment in orthopedic surgery and expand into other surgical specialties, benefiting more patients. The ultimate goal is to introduce this technology to the global market, driving medical innovation and advancing healthcare worldwide.
