Against this backdrop, a research team led by Dr. Cheng-Wei Lin at Chiayi Chang Gung Memorial Hospital has developed a portable saliva conductivity monitoring device that reflects blood sugar levels by detecting changes in saliva conductivity. This innovative technology offers a painless, rapid, and convenient approach to diabetes risk assessment, potentially enhancing patients' willingness to manage their health more proactively.

Challenges in Traditional Monitoring: Pain and High Costs as Barriers

Current blood sugar monitoring primarily relies on fingerstick blood tests, which, while highly accurate, can cause pain, discomfort, and financial burdens, making it difficult for many patients to adhere to daily monitoring. Additionally, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems, despite providing real-time data, remain costly and complex to operate, limiting their widespread adoption.

Accurate Blood Sugar Monitoring with a Tiny Saliva Sample in 30 Seconds

Research has shown that electrolyte concentrations in the saliva of diabetes patients are significantly elevated and strongly correlated with blood sugar levels. The newly developed device leverages this principle, utilizing a high-sensitivity sensor chip and a portable conductivity meter, effectively minimizing signal interference from saliva proteins. By using just a small saliva sample, the device can complete a test within 30 seconds, providing an efficient tool for diabetes risk assessment.

In clinical trials involving 395 participants, the device achieved an accuracy rate of 75%, demonstrating its practical application in diabetes risk prediction. Compared to traditional blood sugar monitoring, saliva conductivity testing offers a non-invasive, easy-to-use, and cost-effective alternative. This not only enhances patient comfort but also makes it suitable for medical institutions, home health monitoring, and primary healthcare screening, providing a more accessible solution for diabetes risk assessment.

Commercialization Within Five Years to Enhance Patient Health Management

Dr. Cheng-Wei Lin stated that the technology has now entered the pilot production phase, and the team will continue to refine its accuracy while collaborating with medical institutions and health management centers to accelerate clinical applications and market adoption. The goal is to commercialize the device within five years, allowing more diabetes patients to benefit from this innovative technology, improve self-health management, and enhance their quality of life.
