Primary Cushion for Stability, Adjustable Auxiliary Pillow for Angle Control—Enabling Safe and Efficient Repositioning for Bedridden PatientsFeb 13, 2025

As societies age, the safety of repositioning and postural support for long-term bedridden patients has become a critical issue in nursing care. Recognizing the importance of this challenge, the team led by Head Nurse CHEN, YA-JU at Shuang Ho Hospital has developed the "Easy Turn Cushion." Utilizing the log-rolling principle and ergonomic design, this innovation reduces the risk of fractures caused by improper repositioning and helps prevent pressure injuries associated with prolonged immobility, offering an efficient and labor-saving solution for patient care.

Traditional Aids Fall Short, Increasing Care Risks

A 2019 study found that approximately 25% of fractures among long-term care residents occur during repositioning, transfers, or daily care. Moreover, the 30-day mortality rate following a hip fracture can reach 6% to 7%. However, existing repositioning aids on the market are often limited in functionality, failing to simultaneously address the needs of repositioning, postural support, and pressure injury prevention. They also lack secure coverage and stabilization, increasing the risk of secondary injuries during use. Additionally, most of these tools do not effectively fix the repositioning angle, making it difficult to prevent pressure injuries. Improper force application by caregivers can also lead to occupational injuries.

More Than Just Safety—Enhanced Efficiency with Clinically Proven Results

The Easy Turn Cushion consists of a primary cushion and an adjustable-angle auxiliary pillow, specifically designed to accommodate the body types of Asian patients. The primary cushion, measuring 130–150 cm in width, securely supports the patient’s shoulders, hips, and knees. It is equipped with specially designed handles that enable caregivers to reposition patients independently. The auxiliary pillow can be adjusted to 30, 60, or 90 degrees to provide optimal support and comfort during repositioning, effectively preventing pressure injuries and fractures. Made from a special material, the cushion is waterproof, slip-resistant, breathable, and machine washable, enhancing convenience and hygiene.

A one-year clinical study demonstrated that using the Easy Turn Cushion significantly improved repositioning accuracy. The correct repositioning rate among caregivers increased from 60% to 99%, while the percentage of patients achieving proper positioning rose from 38% to 100%. Additionally, the incidence of pressure injuries significantly declined, with no reported fractures or other adverse events. Caregivers also reported a substantial reduction in the physical strain required for repositioning, particularly relieving pressure on the lower back and improving overall work efficiency.

Expanding Market Presence—Upgrading Repositioning Care

Head Nurse CHEN highlighted that Taiwan has officially entered an aging society, with statistics showing that 359,000 people required long-term care in 2023. The future market for long-term care is projected to reach NT$4.03 billion. The Easy Turn Cushion is already available at Wellcare Health Care retail stores and online marketplaces across Taiwan. The team is also actively expanding leasing partnerships with healthcare institutions. Moving forward, they plan to further refine the technology and expand into Asian markets, providing advanced repositioning solutions for elderly care worldwide.
