Ultra-Slim 1mm Nasopharyngeal Endoscope Minimizes Friction and Reduces Infection RiskDec 11, 2024

Innovative Design by China Medical University Hospital Team, Led by Vice Superintendent Kuang-Chao Chen

A groundbreaking miniature nasopharyngeal endoscope has been developed by the team led by Dr. Kuang-Chao Chen, Vice Superintendent of China Medical University Hospital. By reducing the scope diameter to an ultra-slim 2.1mm and refining its tip design, this innovation significantly decreases friction with the nasal mucosa. This not only minimizes patient discomfort and pain but also eliminates the need for local anesthesia in many cases.

Limitations of Traditional Endoscopes Highlight the Need for Innovation

The demand for nasopharyngeal endoscopy continues to grow, with over 250,000 procedures performed annually in Taiwan in 2021 alone. However, the limitations of traditional endoscopic technology have become increasingly apparent. Conventional endoscopes, with diameters ranging from 2.9 to 4.3mm and cylindrical lenses, often cause discomfort due to friction with mucosal surfaces. Patients frequently experience sneezing or require anesthetics, complicating the procedure.

In contrast, the miniature endoscope offers a more patient-friendly alternative, transforming the examination into a less invasive, smoother experience. This underscores the importance of technological innovation in enhancing the quality of healthcare services.

Personalized, Painless, and High-Definition: A Comprehensive Performance Upgrade

This miniature endoscope overcomes size constraints with a catheter diameter of just 1mm, reducing insertion resistance. Its unique teardrop-shaped lens design minimizes friction with the mucosa, dramatically improving patient comfort. The device also features a specialized optical system that optimizes LED light diffusion while using circuit design to control brightness and temperature, preventing image overexposure or blurriness.

The flexibility and rigidity of the scope’s wiring have been meticulously adjusted through extensive testing to ensure smooth maneuverability and avoid distortion during procedures. Clinical trials have demonstrated that this endoscope delivers clear and stable imaging without requiring local anesthesia. Additionally, its single-use design significantly reduces the risk of cross-infection, enhancing medical safety and efficiency.

Unlimited Potential: A New Benchmark for Painless Examinations

The application of this miniature endoscope not only improves patient comfort but also addresses infection control through its single-use design. This reduces cross-contamination risks and lowers maintenance costs for healthcare facilities. The device is set to be available for patient self-purchase, providing healthcare institutions with an additional revenue stream.

The prototype design is already complete, with certifications and trials progressing smoothly. Plans are underway to expand into international markets. Moving forward, the research team will continue optimizing product performance and promoting its clinical applications, aiming for widespread use in outpatient clinics, health examination centers, and operating rooms.
