Far EasTone Telecommunications (Far EasTone) and Far Eastern Hospital recently announced their joint initiative to advance 5G telemedicine in Indonesia, addressing the region's healthcare needs and showcasing Taiwan's medical diplomacy. Far EasTone President Chee Ching highlighted the company’s innovative 5G telemedicine platform, developed in-house with a focus on coverage, eco-friendliness, and security. This platform, already deployed across all remote and island health centers designated by Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare, is used in emergency rescue, home care, and health consultation scenarios, demonstrating the versatile applications of 5G in healthcare.
International Expansion of 5G Telemedicine
Since 2022, Far EasTone has supported Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital in establishing a "Telemedicine Center" in Palau, marking the first international deployment of Taiwan's medical resources via its 5G telemedicine platform. Building on this success, Far EasTone has partnered with Far Eastern Hospital to promote its telemedicine solutions abroad, with the aim of providing seamless access to Taiwan’s high-quality healthcare resources to regions in need.
Indonesia, which has prioritized strengthening its healthcare system through policies promoting electronic medical records, digital health, and telemedicine, offers significant opportunities for expansion. In October 2024, Far EasTone and Far Eastern Hospital participated in the "Indonesia Hospital Expo 2024," the country’s largest professional medical industry exhibition. They showcased their ISO27001- and HIPAA-certified 5G telemedicine platform, which has already been successfully implemented across Taiwan. The initiative received positive feedback, marking a milestone in connecting with Indonesia's healthcare market.
A Leader in Taiwan’s 5G Telemedicine Evolution
Far EasTone launched Taiwan’s first 5G telemedicine service in 2020, now serving 56 towns in 15 counties, benefiting over 45,000 people. Its "5G Ambulance" service, extending to Penghu and Lienchiang counties, currently supports 10 counties across Taiwan, with nearly 2,000 users. Following the implementation of new regulations for telemedicine in 2024, 77 healthcare institutions have installed the system, establishing 211 virtual clinics. These clinics are integrated with Far EasTone's "Health+" app, offering features such as virtual health insurance cards and e-prescriptions, enabling comprehensive video consultations.
Driving Digital Healthcare Transformation
In line with the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s next-generation digital healthcare initiatives and the National Health Insurance Administration’s “Everyone’s Medical Project,” Far EasTone has developed a cloud-based HIS (Health Information System) for primary clinics, compliant with the FHIR electronic medical record exchange standard. This system integrates with Far EasTone’s proven 5G telemedicine platform and the "Health+" app, accelerating digital transformation in primary care, expanding capacity, and establishing a reliable and secure community healthcare network.
Through its contributions to Taiwan's health initiatives and the export of successful experiences in smart healthcare, Far EasTone strengthens Taiwan’s global influence, leveraging innovation to enhance national competitiveness and international impact.
