2024 Taiwan Healthcare Expo: NCKU Hospital Showcases Strength in Artificial Intelligence and Precision MedicineDec 07, 2024

The 2024 Taiwan Healthcare Expo, held from December 5 to 8, showcased National Cheng Kung University Hospital (NCKU)’s innovations in artificial intelligence (AI) and precision medicine. With 12 outstanding teams participating, NCKU demonstrated comprehensive technologies across prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, highlighting its capabilities in integrating AI with cutting-edge medical devices.

A team led by Professor Shun-Yu Li from NCKU’s Department of Electrical Engineering developed the "Guardian Angel" heart disease diagnostic system, which uses a wireless smart platform and AI recognition to monitor heart health in real-time. This system addresses challenges like caregiver shortages and the difficulty of providing preventive alerts, moving toward the goal of nationwide health. NCKU’s Industry-University Innovation Center collaborated with Hengxin Technology CEO Wen-Yen Chang on the "Smart Dynamic Heart Function Evaluation and Sudden Death Warning System," which integrates AI to provide real-time heart health warnings.

NCKU’s Nursing Department, led by Nurse Yueh-Ju Liao, introduced the "Smart Grip Ring," an innovative exercise aid designed for dialysis patients. The product ensures correct handgrip exercises, extending fistula longevity and optimizing nursing care quality. This was paired with the "Nurses' Assistant" system, developed by Nurse Li-Chaun Hung’s team at NCKU’s Douliu branch. The system uses wireless radio technology to monitor breathing, heart rate, activity, and sleep, sending alerts via remote monitoring and smart diagnostics to improve caregiving safety. Educational and companion robots were also featured to assist with health education and social interaction, significantly improving nursing efficiency.

The "ALOVAS" AI Pathology Image Annotation and Analysis Platform, developed by Professor Pau-Choo Chung’s team from the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, helps physicians analyze pathology images by referencing cellular and tissue characteristics, reducing the workload of medical professionals.

Dr. Meng-Ying Lin’s team from the Internal Medicine Department introduced an AI-assisted system for locating bile duct stones, which not only helps pinpoint the stones’ location but also reduces the burden on doctors reading numerous images, improving efficiency and reducing misdiagnosis risks.

The Behavioral Medicine Institute’s Associate Professor and attending physician Huai-Hsuan Tseng’s team used AI to assist in collecting and analyzing emotional symptoms. This AI-powered multilingual robot helps identify depression symptoms, analyze facial and vocal emotions, and provides a personalized depression index and potential influencing factors to facilitate subsequent assessments and treatment plans.

In the field of drug development, Dr. Wen-Bin Su’s team from the Clinical Medical Research Center developed a polymer-nanoized RTK inhibitor targeting KRAS-G12C mutant lung cancer. This nano-drug requires only one-tenth of the original dose to significantly treat a KRAS-G12C mutant lung cancer mouse model, offering new hope for patients with this mutation.

The "Next-Generation Surgery and Care System," developed by Dr. Yu-Ning Chen’s Surgical Department, integrates advanced imaging equipment, preoperative VR, 3D imaging, and 3D-printed simulation technology to enhance the safety and accuracy of surgeries.

Dr. Pi-Shan Sung’s team from the Neurology Department introduced the "Cross-Hospital Acute Stroke Referral Platform," which improves the efficiency of acute stroke treatment by connecting hospitals for timely intravenous thrombolysis, significantly improving referral efficiency, thrombectomy rates, and patient outcomes.

These innovations not only showcase NCKU Hospital’s progress in medical technology but also emphasize the importance of smart healthcare in improving medical quality and processes. The expo invites healthcare professionals and industry leaders to experience firsthand the transformative technologies reshaping the future of the healthcare industry.
