Innovative Fixation Device with Specialized Slots and Knobs Offers Safer and More Comfortable Care for Critical PatientsDec 03, 2024

Providing care for critically ill patients has always been a top priority in the medical field. To sustain vital functions, such patients often require multiple tubes, such as endotracheal tubes and nasogastric tubes. Traditionally, these tubes are secured using adhesive tape and cotton strings. However, this approach often leads to skin pressure injuries and the risk of tube displacement, which can result in severe medical complications. This not only causes discomfort for the patients but may also lead to life-threatening outcomes.

To address these challenges, a team led by Associate Professor Zu-Chun Lin from Tzu Chi University has developed an innovative “composite tube fixation and support device.” This groundbreaking technology aims to provide a safer and more comfortable experience for critically ill patients, improving care outcomes.

Adhesive-Free, Multi-Tube Solution: A Breakthrough in Patient Care

The device employs a unique design featuring specialized slots and knobs to securely anchor multiple tubes to the patient’s face. It allows for easy adjustment of the tubes’ position according to the patient’s needs. Made from soft, comfortable materials, the device minimizes discomfort. Key advantages include:

Adhesive-Free, Reducing Skin Pressure Injuries:

The innovative design eliminates the need for adhesive tape, significantly reducing the risk of skin injuries caused by tape application or removal.

Multi-Tube Compatibility:

The device can simultaneously secure endotracheal tubes, nasogastric tubes, and oral bite blocks. It accommodates various tube sizes, enhancing usability.

Ease of Removal and Adjustment:

Healthcare providers can quickly detach and reposition the device, reducing operation time and easing their workload.

Safe and Biocompatible Materials:

Constructed from biocompatible materials, the device is safe for prolonged use without causing harm to the patient.

Enhancing Critical Care: Associate Professor Zu-Chun Lin’s Vision

Associate Professor Zu-Chun Lin emphasized the importance of addressing tube-related complications. According to the Taiwan Clinical Performance Indicator System (TCPI), the number of patients using endotracheal tubes and ventilators in Taiwan has been steadily increasing, as has the incidence of tube displacement and related adverse events. Data from the Taiwan Patient Safety Reporting System (TPRS) show that tube-related incidents, especially endotracheal tube dislodgment, are common and carry severe consequences.

This innovative medical device represents the culmination of years of effort by the Tzu Chi University team. The goal is to improve care quality for critically ill patients while alleviating the workload of healthcare providers.

Patent Secured, Global Market Potential in Sight

The team has already secured a Taiwanese invention patent for the device and is actively pursuing clinical trials and commercialization efforts. With robust policy support, technological advantages, and a clear market strategy, the product is poised for success on the global stage. It holds great promise to revolutionize the care of critically ill patients by addressing clinical challenges and meeting a significant market demand.
