Far EasTone Telecommunications is expanding its efforts in telemedicine services. CEO Chee Ching emphasized that, rather than chasing a 5G "killer application," the company is channeling its R&D resources into 5G "rescuer applications." By integrating 5G networks with software development and cloud technologies, Far EasTone has independently developed a 5G telemedicine platform that extends medical resources to 15 counties and 56 rural areas. "This is not about business; it’s about giving back to society," said Chee, noting that the business opportunities in this field are expected to grow steadily over time.
Chee highlighted that rural areas are most in need of medical resources, and telemedicine is helping to address this gap while expanding into emergency care to ensure critical treatment within the golden hour. Beyond rural areas, similar demands are now emerging in urban settings, where telemedicine clinics serve as excellent alternatives to traditional care.
Chee explained that Far EasTone’s entry into healthcare stemmed from its early investment in IoT platforms, which has already yielded significant results. The company’s smart information and communications business focuses on four key pillars: smart cities, digital transformation, smart healthcare, and telecommunications system integration.
All of these pillars depend on advanced platform technologies, forming the backbone of their 5G healthcare initiatives.
Shih Chung-liang, Director-General of Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA), outlined four essential elements for telemedicine development: regulations, technology, service models, and financial support.
Far EasTone’s innovative approach and long-term commitment position it as a key player in advancing telemedicine and bringing sustainable healthcare solutions to underserved communities.
