ITRI’s Automated MSC Stem Cell Production System Enhances Safety by Reducing Human ErrorNov 10, 2024

The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has developed a breakthrough automated production system for mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), combining artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and sterile automation technology. This intelligent system enables highly efficient and streamlined cell production. With real-time cell imaging for quality control, it continuously monitors cell growth, automatically adjusting culture parameters based on data analysis to ensure stable cell quality. The system’s sterile, automated design significantly reduces contamination risks, thereby enhancing the safety of cell-based products.

Technological Highlights and Market Potential

The system’s key advantage lies in its high level of automation and intelligence. Its fully enclosed design, equipped with automated liquid exchange, effectively reduces contamination risk and maintains a clean cell culture environment. Additionally, the system integrates AI-based image recognition to monitor cell growth, count, and morphology in real time. Through big data analysis, it establishes digital growth models that accurately predict cell growth curves, optimizing culture conditions. It also includes anomaly detection, quickly identifying and addressing potential contamination, ensuring the quality of cell products.

These technological advantages greatly increase production efficiency and capacity while ensuring consistent and stable cell product quality. Compared to traditional manual operations, this automated system reduces human error, cuts production costs, and shortens cell process development timelines. Its modular design also allows flexibility for various cell types and culture scales, enhancing its applicability. Notably, the system has passed clinical production validation and meets regulatory standards, positioning it to become Taiwan’s first intelligent cell production system compliant with regulatory requirements for cell therapy manufacturing.

Advancing Precision Medicine and Expanding Industry Applications

According to Project Manager Chih-Hung Huang of ITRI, automated cell production is critical for achieving the scale and standardization required in cell therapy, a key area in the future of medicine. The successful development of this system will propel the growth of Taiwan’s cell therapy industry chain, strengthening its competitive edge in the global market. The system’s potential applications extend beyond MSCs to include immune and tumor cells, creating new opportunities for cancer treatment, regenerative medicine, and immunotherapy. The team will continue refining the system, integrating IoT and cloud computing to further enhance cell production management. ITRI also aims to collaborate with academia and industry to drive the cell therapy sector, positioning Taiwan as a global hub for cell therapy innovation.

The launch of this system addresses industry demands for high-quality, high-efficiency cell production, accelerating the development and market availability of cell therapy products and ultimately benefiting more patients. More importantly, it will drive Taiwan’s biomedical industry’s transformation, attracting local and international firms to invest in cell therapy and establishing a comprehensive industry ecosystem.
