In recent years, the domestic biomedical sector has gradually demonstrated its financial strength overseas. Notably, Bora Pharmaceuticals has completed three acquisitions of American pharmaceutical companies, contributing to a total outbound merger and acquisition expenditure of over NT$12.6 billion (approximately US$410 million) by Taiwan's biotech industry this year alone.

Since the first quarter of this year, Bora Pharmaceuticals has initiated acquisitions of Upsher-Smith Laboratories, Emergent BioSolutions' sterile injectables facility, and Pyros Pharmaceuticals in the United States, with the total acquisition amount exceeding US$267 million. Together with its historical acquisitions, Bora is recognized as a leading player in mergers and acquisitions within Taiwan’s biotech sector.

In addition to Bora, another major Taiwanese pharmaceutical company, Lotus Pharmaceutical, has launched two acquisition plans targeting the Southeast Asian market, specifically in Thailand and Vietnam. Coupled with acquisitions by ICARES Medicus and Formosa Laboratories, which have also engaged in acquiring American companies, the total overseas acquisition expenditure for Taiwan’s biomedical industry this year has reached over US$39 million (approximately NT$1.26 billion).

Lotus Pharmaceutical aims to expand its presence in Southeast Asia, having completed the acquisition of Teva Pharmaceuticals’ Thai subsidiary in July of this year, followed by the purchase of the widely used anti-inflammatory product Alpha Choay in Vietnam and Cambodia in October, with each acquisition priced at approximately US$5 million.

Furthermore, ICARES Medicus announced this year that it has acquired 95% of the issued common stock of the American company Millennium for US$25.65 million. Upon completion of this acquisition, ICARES will own 100% of Millennium.
