Center Laboratories' Anya Biopharm to Launch Weight Loss DrugOct 21, 2024

On the 25th, Center Laboratories' subsidiary Anya Biopharm will debut on the Emerging Stock Market at a reference price of NT$42 per share. The company is among the few globally that develops oral GLP-1 class drugs, and the royalty rights for a single drug are expected to exceed NT$10 billion.

Anya Biopharm stated that it possesses one of the world's few oral peptide platforms, with a future business model focused on licensing these platforms to assist peptide drug development companies in converting injectable formulations into oral ones. The company will target GLP-1 drugs, aiming to capture a share of the global weight loss drug market, which is valued in the hundreds of billions of dollars.

Founded in 2016, Anya Biopharm's founder, Siegfried Gschliesser, is fluent in Chinese and previously served as the general manager of Merck. Gschliesser noted that Anya's first product, ANY002, has already been licensed to an international pharmaceutical company, with royalties recognized since June of this year. This product is an oral formulation of GLP-1, developed using the core ingredients from Novo Nordisk's products, and is one of the few oral peptide drugs available globally for treating type 2 diabetes and obesity. Anya's second product, ANY004, is another oral GLP-1 drug designed for weight loss, which is also planned for licensing to an international pharmaceutical company.

Industry analysts believe that Novo Nordisk's GLP-1 patents will expire in Asia, Africa, and the Americas starting in 2026, with expiration in the U.S. projected for 2030.

The Indian government has also announced that starting in 2026, it will begin subsidizing major Indian generic drug manufacturers such as Biocon, Cipla, Dr. Reddy's, and Sun Pharma to produce diabetes and weight loss medications. This is expected to trigger "intense price wars," potentially making popular weight loss drugs more accessible.
