Taichung Veterans General Hospital recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the National Atomic Research Institute to jointly promote the application of nuclear medicine and AI imaging platforms, aiming to advance medical research and improve public health.
The collaboration includes several key projects: the development of contrast agents for atherosclerosis and liver function, targeted radiotherapy drugs for prostate cancer, the use of iodine-123 MIBG for diagnosing Lewy body dementia, and the development and application of an AI precision imaging platform for neurodegenerative diseases. Through this partnership, both parties will share the latest research findings and clinical experience to expand the application of nuclear medicine in treating cardiovascular, liver, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases.
Kao Tsu-mu, Director of the National Atomic Research Institute, emphasized that the institute’s core mission is to enhance public health and well-being through the application of atomic energy technology and to ensure the stable supply of nuclear medicine. In addition to operating a 30 MeV medium cyclotron for the production and supply of nuclear medicines, the institute is actively promoting the construction of a new generation 70 MeV cyclotron, which is expected to begin operations in 2027, further strengthening its capabilities in nuclear medicine research and development.
Shih-Ann Chen, Director of Taichung Veterans General Hospital, highlighted that the hospital is patient-centered, continuously adopting advanced medical technologies and equipment to improve the treatment of acute, severe, rare, and complex conditions while also fostering cutting-edge research and innovation. He expressed excitement about partnering with the institute, which has rich international clinical trial experience, to safeguard the health of the nation.
Chen also noted that since 2021, Taichung Veterans General Hospital has actively developed advanced, smart, regenerative, and precision medicine. In both 2023 and 2024, the hospital was ranked among the world’s top 300 best smart hospitals. Most recently, in 2025, it became the only hospital in Greater China to be included in Newsweek’s global top 100 smart hospitals, ranking 99th.
