A team led by Shiang-Jiuun Chen at Chia-Yi Christian Hospital has successfully developed the "Smart Thermos - Digital Temperature-Controlled Peritoneal Dialysis Solution Monitoring Device." This innovation combines human-centered design, IoT technology, and artificial intelligence to offer peritoneal dialysis patients a more convenient, precise, and safer home treatment experience.
Addressing Pain Points for Peritoneal Dialysis Patients: The Birth of "Smart Thermos"
Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) rely on dialysis treatments to survive, and peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a common method used for home treatment. However, the traditional PD process often presents challenges for patients, such as time-consuming solution warming, difficulty in controlling infusion volume, and increased infection risks, all of which can impact treatment outcomes and quality of life.
The Smart Thermos: A Comprehensive Solution
To improve the PD experience, the Smart Thermos offers three core functions:
Rapid Temperature Control: Using electric heating technology, the device quickly warms the dialysis solution to the optimal temperature and maintains it, preventing discomfort from cold solutions.
Precise Infusion: Equipped with an electronic scale, it accurately monitors the infusion volume, ensuring the right amount of fluid is used, which enhances the efficiency of the dialysis process.
AI Image Recognition: By capturing images of the drained dialysis fluid and analyzing its turbidity using AI algorithms, the device helps detect early signs of potential infections, such as peritonitis.
Proven Performance and Accuracy
The team conducted experiments to quantify the device’s superior performance. Results showed that the device can heat the dialysis solution to 37°C within 15 minutes, ensuring both fast and accurate temperature control. The built-in electronic scale system significantly reduces errors in fluid volume, guaranteeing precision during treatment. Additionally, with the use of deep learning models, the device achieved a 97% accuracy rate in detecting the turbidity of the dialysis fluid, providing strong clinical diagnostic support.
Unlimited Potential: Setting a New Benchmark for Dialysis Treatment
Shiang-Jiuun Chen expressed that this device has significant potential not only in the Taiwanese market but also globally. Moving forward, the research team plans to continue optimizing the "Smart Thermos" and actively promote its clinical application to provide patients with more comprehensive care. The team also seeks partnerships with industry and academia to bring this technology to the international market, offering higher-quality medical services to more patients.
