Acer Medical Expands in Thailand: AI Ophthalmology Screening Software "VeriSee" Gains CertificationSep 24, 2024

Acer Medical continues to make strides in expanding its presence in the healthcare market. On Monday (23rd), Acer Medical announced that its AI-based ophthalmic medical device software has achieved another milestone in Thailand. The "VeriSee AMD" Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) screening software successfully obtained a medical device license issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA THAI) under the Ministry of Public Health in Thailand, marking the company’s second certification in the country.

Furthermore, Acer Medical's "VeriSee DR" Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) diagnostic software has been successfully implemented in over 30 hospitals across Thailand.

Acer Medical highlighted that the approval of "VeriSee AMD" in Thailand is a significant step, particularly in light of the country's aging population. Thailand, with a population of around 60 million, has more than 10% of its people over the age of 60, reflecting a rapidly aging demographic.

One of the leading causes of blindness in the elderly population in Thailand is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Early symptoms of AMD, including blurred vision, distorted vision, and the appearance of black spots or shadows in the center of one's vision, are often not recognized by patients, leading to delays in seeking medical attention. Regular screening for macular degeneration is one of the most effective ways to prevent the condition from worsening.

In addition to the success of "VeriSee AMD," Acer Medical’s "VeriSee DR" Diabetic Retinopathy diagnostic software has also performed well in the Thai market. It is currently being used in over 30 hospitals. Given Thailand's significant urban-rural divide, this software provides high-risk diabetic patients in remote areas, such as the northeastern provinces, with easier access to screening. In the capital city of Bangkok, with a population exceeding 10 million—nearly 20 times that of the second-largest city, Chiang Mai—hospitals are often overcrowded. By implementing "VeriSee DR" in leading hospitals in Bangkok, the software helps streamline the initial screening process for diabetic patients, reducing wait times and enhancing the efficiency of healthcare professionals.

Acer Medical has entered the AI medical imaging interpretation field in collaboration with medical centers and the healthcare industry. The VeriSee series of ophthalmic screening software has already been successfully integrated into nearly 80% of medical centers across Taiwan. Acer Medical has obtained 13 certifications in both Taiwan and international markets, aiming to leverage AI healthcare products to enhance the quality of medical services while expanding its reach into Southeast Asian countries.
