In Taiwan, end-stage renal disease (ESRD) affects many patients, and peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a key treatment option. A research team led by Professor Chih-Kang Chiang from National Taiwan University Hospital has developed an innovative AI chatbot system designed specifically for peritoneal dialysis patients. This system enables real-time interaction with patients, offering accurate educational information to enhance patients' self-care abilities while reducing the burden on healthcare professionals.
Peritoneal dialysis patients often face challenges in managing their home care, such as insufficient information and concerns about proper procedures. Traditional education methods, such as printed materials or phone consultations, are often unable to meet the immediate needs of patients. To address this, the research team developed the AI chatbot, which serves as a one-stop educational platform, covering all the essential information that PD patients need. Through this platform, patients can easily access the following resources:
Professor Chih-Kang Chiang, the project lead, noted that the PD AI Chatbot is currently free to use and only requires account registration without the need for personal data input. The system content is designed by nurses and maintained by them on the backend, with no limit on the number of users. Feedback on the usability, accessibility, acceptance, and effectiveness of the PD AI Chatbot has been overwhelmingly positive. This AI chatbot not only improves patients' quality of life but also reduces the workload on healthcare professionals.
To date, the product has been shared with 25 healthcare institutions, involving 75 peritoneal dialysis nurses. Looking ahead, the team plans to continue optimizing the system and actively promote its use in other medical institutions to benefit more PD patients. By integrating AI technology, patients can take a more proactive role in managing their health, contributing to greater efficiency in the healthcare system. This breakthrough has significant implications not only for Taiwan but also offers new hope for kidney disease patients worldwide.
