Chang Gung Collaborates with Renowned Malaysian Rehabilitation Hospital for Upper Limb Rehabilitation in Children Using SynslaiSep 09, 2024

As global challenges such as declining birth rates, aging populations, and chronic diseases become more pressing, rehabilitation medicine has gained increasing prominence, particularly in healthcare for children, adults, and the elderly. Rehabilitation helps address pain and improve muscle strength. In response, Chang Gung Hospital, together with Taiwanese manufacturers, is advancing innovative rehabilitation technologies in Malaysia. The hospital partnered with the well-known HRC (Hospital Rehabilitation Cheras) in Malaysia to hold seminars and exchange programs, launching collaborative research on using the Synslai system for upper limb rehabilitation in children.

On August 23, a rehabilitation team from Chang Gung Hospital, led by Ching-Pang Yu, Executive Director of the Administrative Center, visited Kuala Lumpur's HRC. The team included Yu-Cheng-Hao Pei, Deputy Director of the Rehabilitation Department and AI Center at Linkou Chang Gung Hospital, Chien-Chia Huang, Assistant Professor at Chang Gung University’s Intelligent Medical Innovation Program, and representatives from Wistron Medical Technology and Rehabotics Medical Technology, among others.

Founded in 2016, HRC is Malaysia's only public rehabilitation specialty hospital and the largest rehabilitation hospital in the country, enjoying a significant reputation in the local medical community. It offers services such as dental consultations, adult and pediatric rehabilitation, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, as well as physical, occupational, speech, swallowing, and sensory integration therapies. The hospital is also a primary institution for training specialized rehabilitation physicians.

Dr. Faizul Nizam bin Abu Salim, Director of HRC, emphasized that through seminars and knowledge sharing, the hospital envisions advancements in digitizing health databases, applying artificial intelligence (AI), utilizing technology-assisted rehabilitation training, and fostering two-way exchange for professional development. These collaborations will positively impact service quality, clinical research, and innovation in rehabilitation medicine. He expressed hope for deeper cooperation between the two institutions.

Yu-Cheng-Hao Pei noted that rehabilitation medicine in Malaysia is rapidly evolving, and both Taiwan and Malaysia have their respective strengths. Chang Gung Hospital’s experience in applying and promoting innovative rehabilitation technologies can inject fresh momentum into Malaysia’s rehabilitation sector and open new opportunities in Taiwan's "New Southbound Policy" for healthcare collaboration.

The Synslai system, co-developed by Chang Gung Hospital and Rehabotics Medical Technology, is a bilateral upper limb training platform that does not rely on motor power. Chang Gung's Rehabilitation Department will collaborate with HRC on research using Synslai for children's upper limb rehabilitation, aiming to improve training efficiency and reduce the social and familial burden.

This rehabilitation medicine seminar and professional development exchange attracted around 70 participants, including medical personnel and specialists from HRC. Ching-Pang Yu stated that Chang Gung Hospital will continue to deepen its cooperation with Malaysia in rehabilitation medicine and health promotion. Based on this collaboration, the hospital plans to expand to other Southeast Asian countries and promote the internationalization of Taiwan’s medical services.
