SHL Medical Reaffirms Commitment with $100 Million Investment in Taiwan Over the Next Five YearsSep 04, 2024

On the 3rd, SHL Medical, a global leader in pen injectors, announced its fourth signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs. The company will invest $100 million (approximately NT$3.195 billion) in Taiwan over the next five years, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to strengthening its operations in the region.

Founded in 1989, SHL Medical is one of the few international medical giants that originated in Taiwan. The company’s pen-type auto-injectors are currently supplied to the world's top 25 pharmaceutical companies, benefiting 3.1 million patients worldwide as of 2023.

Earlier in July, SHL announced its partnership with Great Honor Asset Management and held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new facility in Taoyuan, which is expected to be completed by 2027. The $100 million investment over the next five years will be used to upgrade equipment and optimize operations at its Taiwan site.

On the 3rd, SHL signed the MOU with the Ministry of Economic Affairs at the 2024 Taiwan Global Investment and Market Trends Forum, hosted by Minister Jyh-Huei Kuo. The forum's participants included representatives from AWS Taiwan and Hong Kong, Boston Consulting Group, Morgan Stanley, Quanta Computer, SEMI (International Semiconductor Industry Association), and UBS Securities.

Sebastian Feng, General Manager of SHL Taiwan, stated that this strategic investment will bolster SHL’s manufacturing capabilities in developing advanced and innovative drug delivery technologies, supporting the company's long-term growth objectives. The investment also aligns with Taiwan’s goal to strengthen its position as a global biotech and pharmaceutical industry hub, with Taiwan playing a significant role in SHL’s global operations.

Feng emphasized that the investment will focus on enhancing SHL's Taiwan operations to meet the growing demand for self-injection devices. The company plans to allocate resources to advanced automation, workforce development, workplace and equipment upgrades, and sustainable manufacturing practices. These measures align with SHL’s commitment to improving efficiency and reducing its operational carbon footprint.

Feng highlighted that this announcement, following the groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility in Taoyuan's Nankan district and the launch of new electric vehicle initiatives, underscores SHL Medical's ongoing investment in Taiwan. This investment not only supports the company's growth strategy but also contributes to the local economy and the advancement of the region’s medical technology industry.
